View Full Version : VTF3 MK2 Should be Placed on it's Side????

Was reading a number of threads stating that the VTF-3 Mk2 sounds much better on it's side with the ports facing up and driver facing forward. Can someone confirm or deny this? I am supposed to take delivery this afternoon of a unit but the WAF is going to be in the toilet if this is so. Apparently DR. Hsu has conformed this finding?

The issue with craigsub's setup was that he has very thick padded carpet over cement. There was not enough clearance between the driver and carpet. Somewhere he posted later that he raised the VTF-3 up a bit and got much better numbers.

He visits this forum, so hopefully he will chime in.

I could not find revised numbers. Do you know where they are?

Not exactly.....he posted them on one of the forums if I recall correctly.

Well I'm getting very strange FR curves as well.

What do you mean? In a room...without EQing.....it will not be flat. Some rooms are worse than others.

What equipment are you using to measure?

Same gear Craig used pretty much. The VTF is way off compared to other subs.

what other subs? Have you tried different locations?

can you post the graphs?

You are using TrueRTA on a PC?

TrueRTA yes. Have a Revel 15 and a Servo 15 here. Both are plus or minus 3 from 23-50. The VTF is plus or minus 9. And it's thick and slow sounding. Not at all like the MK 1.

Very interesting. I have heard the MK2 at Hsu's offices...and it sounded very similar if not the same as my older MK1.

I assume everything is properly hooked up and calibrated.

I would send Dr. Hsu an email.

Indeed properly calibrated and broken in. Something's way off and my friend brought his over and got very close to the same measurements.

Would have been nice to mention that earlier.

You have a VTF-3MK1 as well?

Craig definitely did not find it thick and slow. Do you have thick carpet?

Time for you to give the good Dr. a note, or send them back.

you just took delivery of it today? Your friend brought his over already? And the sub is broken in?

Yes I bought it used. Has about 75 hours on it. I do have a MK 1 too.

I would call or email Dr. Hsu and ask about it.

Like I said, I have heard the VTF-3MK2, as well as the other downfiring Hsu subs, and they all put out that great Hsu bass.

Why don't you try it on its side, just for fun? I understand you don't want it that way (I wouldn't either), but it might help to evaluate the problem you're having.

A couple of ideas... Stand it so the ports face up, and the driver faces you... that also gives the smallest footprint, so placement is easy. Yes, you lose the blue light, but see what it does for the response... and also try some more room placements ideas... keeping the VTF-3/2 away from boundaries seems to help...

Sounds like room resonances...especially in light of your friend's sub having the same response.

Once we played with the Vtf-3/2 in the driver forward position, we did find that elevating it another inch helped... even though there was still 1/2 an inch of clearance with the "regular" feet.

A physicist with another speaker company suggested the unit was having a problem with the lack of any flex in the concrete floor, combined with the small distance from that floor, that was causing problems with the loading of the driver for the tuning of the port... without getting into a long winded explanation, using four one inch blocks of wood also solved the problem....

Nick - Play with room placement, as it will help. You may also be a "sealed design" guy... Having both here, there are differences...

Lack of flex should be at its advantage, isn't that why some speakers use concrete horns?

craigsub

His theory was that this affected the loading of the driver as it was affecting the ports...

I wonder if this ever got resolved ?

I purchased the VTF3 MK2 about 3 months ago, and it does not have the lit logo, just the black log like it shows on the web site. Did I get some old stock?

You got the new stock. The lit logo was only on early models. This thread is about a year old, so it is a little confusing.
