View Full Version : Should I get a high pass filter?

Hey Guys,

I'm planning on getting a VTF-2 as soon as they come back in stock. I was wondering if I should get a high pass filter for my mains. Will it really be useful? Also, what roll off frequency would be ideal, assuming a second order high pass filter is used, when my speakers (Axiom M22ti) have the following frequency response graphs:

Frequency response, 20Hz - 20kHz (measured @ 2m, plotted @ 1m)
Loudspeaker sensitivity (averaged 300Hz - 3kHz, 2.83V/1m)

Listening Window, 20Hz - 20kHz (measured @ 2m, plotted @ 1m)

I'm looking for a "very musical sound experience" with seamless bass integration...

Thanks!

Choobak,

High passing the mains is always preferred, because amplifiers must still struggle to reproduce the sound below the roll-off, even if the speaker doesn't play down there.

Most of the time, high pass is built into modern receivers, including almost all Dolby Digital receivers. We recommend a crossover at 80 Hz, which would be appropriate for your speakers. A 100 Hz crossover isn't the end of the world--but not preferred.

If you are using a preamp with separate amplifiers, a high pass box would be a nice addition.

Thanks for the quick response, Sasha!

I ordered my VTF-2 Mk2 today along with a high pass filter!

I've got a tough 4-6 weeks ahead of me. ;)
