Hi HSU community, this is my first post. I am a 16 year old from Omaha Nebraska who loves audio and building stereo systems. I have been told how great the VTF-2 is and I love listening to my friends but the difference is that his parents bought him his. I am a little slim on cash because I just bought my own car. I work two jobs as a web designer and stock boy at the local grocery store. My stereo set up is listed in my signature. All of this was purchased on my own and I hope to have a picture on audioreview.com gallery soon. I was wondering, for under 300 dollars what sub would be my best bet. I needs to be primarily for music and not too large (space is limited). Now, I know what your thinking "the VTF-2 is great" and "why are you even posting?" I am posting because I need sincere help on my problem. I would take a VTF-2 in a heartbeat but 500 bucks doesn't grow on trees. I will take any advice on subs or just about stereo equipment in general.
Thank you for your time,
Zach

Save your cash and get the HSU. You should look on ebay and audiogon for used HSU subs (there aren't many available! I've been looking for some used TN1220HO subs and as soon as they are posted, they are bought up). Be patient and go used, or save your cash and buy new. All of the subwoofers on the market under $300 suck, unless you DIY the subwoofer.

Thanks for the reply, I would love to get a HSU in the future when I go to college or whatever, but space is a major concern. Does anybody have any advice on subs that perform similar to the VTF-2 but arn't so big?
thanks

I do not think there are any. The VTF-2 itself is not really that big. There are smaller subs...such has Earthquakes...but they are expensive, and my understanding, not as nice as the VTF-2.
What size are you looking for? What is more of a concern, price or size? For the money, IMHO, you are not going to find anything. You might want to take a look at Aperion.

You can always email HSU and ask if they have a B Stock VTF-2. You really can not buy a better sub for less money. Even the opposition subwoofer companies are well known to send a customer over to HSU to get a VTF-2. It really is the sub to beat in this price range as most subs costing a lot more do not play flat to 25Hz or play anywhere near the spl.
DIY (if you know what you are doing) could be the only thing that may get a decent price - performance result. But its a gamble and not always going to work out as you expect. The VTF-2 is a sure fire winner in the $500 and under budget. You really can not get good performance out of a small cube, mainly because of the physical demands of generating a 20-25Hz bass wave. Nousaine wraps it all up in the Editors choice award given to the VTF-2 subwoofer.
"Many subs costing four times as much as the VTF-2 would kill for this kind of performance."
Tom Nousaine - Sound and Vision Magazine.
You simply can not buy a better subwoofer off the shelf for this sort of money.
