I am thinking of buying the Hsu system but do not want to run wires at this point. Can this system be used and be effective placing all speakers along the same wall in front of the viewer. If so, what is your recommendation or am I better off with the Bose or Niro systems?

I definitely would not go with either the Bose or Niro. First, even though these systems promise "surround sound" from 2 or less speakers, there is absolutely no substitute for true 5.1 or 6.1 setups. Second, the receiver/amps for these systems have extremely limited audio inputs (especially if you want to utilize new high resolution audio formats such as SACD or DVD-Audio) and very limited power. I have not heard the Niro but I can tell you that the Bose is a complete waste of money. If you have the intention of running wires in the future, I would go for the HSU speakers. In the mean time, you can just set up the front three speakers if you want. You won't get surround sound but then you won't have to spend money on the extra speaker wire for the surrounds until you are ready to put them up. With a good sub, you will still get great stereo sound. When you are ready the run the wires, you already have all the pieces for an amazing 6.1 system. Trust me; you won't go wrong with HSU. I have an HSU 6.1 set up in my apartment at school and the system blows away everyone that comes over (especially if I throw in an SACD or DVD-Audio disc).

3.1 is very good by itself, but many receivers have chips in them to simulate 5.1 out of 2.1 or 3.1 .
