View Full Version : VTF-2 near radiator

Hello,
The most unobtrusive location in my room for my sub is in the corner of the room immediately adjacent to my couch. Thus, the sub would be pinned in on three sides: wall, wall, and couch. However, one of those walls is actually a boxed-in radiator. How much of a problem is it to have the sub immediately adjacent to a radiator? I cannot push the couch further down to create more room as this would cause a door to be blocked. The amount of free space is essentially exactly the width of the sub.
In the attached diagram, box 1 is my ideal location but is next to the radiator. Boxes 2 and 3 are options but not as ideal as room space is limited and either of these two spaces would require elimination of existing furniture (end table, chess table).
Thoughts?
Thanks,
Kyle

How hot does the side of the radiator get - is it the type that has a metal case around it and most of the heat comes out the top, or is it the classic radiator shape.
If you have enough space you can put a 1/2" thick piece of plywood against the radiator to protect the sub. What ever you put there stay away from rigid insulation - it does very nasty things when it gets hot (except for styrofoam). It is more involved, but you could make a sandwich of 1/2" styrofoam with 1/4" cement board against the radiator and 1/4" plywood covered in a soft fabric against your sub. would be a little over an inch thick.

You can submit your room dimensions and layout to Dr. Hsu and he will get back to you with his recommendation.

The radiator puts out heat to the side where the sub is, however it is boxed in so it's not like the sub is directly against the metal of the radiator.
While I would certainly appreciate Dr. Hsu's feedback on my room layout, I'm more interested in knowing whether it is unwise to place a sub near a radiator.

Here is my thought!
You got pretty tough lay out there. The couch seems to be at the right place if you want to get views on both the TV and the fireplace and get all the rear speakers along the side.
Can the radiator moved to the 2nd box location? You probably thought of this already? May be there is more work to do there? But you never know, may be you just little work by extending electrical wires and the radiator. Of course, some retouch works in your lost time.
But if you don't mind the front view of the fireplace, how about swapping the couch with chair positions, have the TV in boxe #2, the sub at #3 but behind the new location of the couch. You still can enjoy the fireplace view with the chair while get all the heat of the fire closed to the couch. But you still have to hook the rear center in the middle of the open space.
And from the drawing the couch look big too me to fit in that configuration.
May be you should post us pictures of the radiator on its current location!

What did you come up as solution to the heat problem from the radiator?
Keep us posted whether or not it is safe to put the sub closed to the radiator!
I would like to know too!
