View Full Version : Sub Gives Its Location Away

My VTF 3.2 is located nearfield in the right corner behind my home theater seats. I get good deep base but I can also tell where the LFE is coming from on occassions. My cross over is 80hz for the front and all four of the rear speakers and I used the work sheet and test cd provided by HSU. I'd be satisfied if I could cure this one problem. Peter and anyone else, what do you suggest?
Thanks.

Are you running it in max out or max extension?
Have you calibrated it with the rest of the equipment?
Try the front corners if you can...
Bypass the oxver on your sub...
Check the distance setting of the sub...

jbug, did you set the distance settings on your receiver to reflect distance from main listening position to the subwoofer?
One thing you can try doing is setting Crossover switch to 'In' on the subwoofer, and setting the crossover knob on the sub to 80Hz.
An alternate would be to either A) lower the crossover frequency on your process to 60Hz, or B) try a different subwoofer location.
Sincerely,

I have the sub set to Max Extension. I'm sure I need to change the distance from the main listening position as I let Oddessey do it and I'm sure it's set to far away. The corner behind and to the right of the seating area is by far the best area for the sub. The front yields weak LFE. I will try the other settings recommended. I like this sub very much as I never get distortion.

I put the sub up front in the right corner (there is no left corner as the room is open going left). I got better results as far as the sub giving away it's position. I'm going to use the test cd to dial it in next.

Glad to hear that!
In my house when i have a sub in the back position or lateral, I can always tell where it is. That is why I always use front right corner. If I cannot use that corner because of WAF, then I start my husband arguments, and so far I have won...HAHAHHAHAH

That is funny. I'm glad I moved it up front cause I'm now getting LFE that I never heard before. It's so good that I'll have to go over all the BD and HDDVD disc that I have. One question though, when I was taking readings on the Radio Schack meter trying to get 80db, the meter was peaking at 82db and bottoming out at 78db. If you average that out it is 80db isn't it?

Try the slow setting when that happens to you.
But yeah, If you were fast enough to see that changes, you are right.
Also....
Remember that the best sub calibration is the one that sounds good to you. So don't take the readings and SPL numbers that serious. After all, you will end making little tweaks sometimes by taste to your original configuration... most probably.HAHAH
