HI
Been a long time I have not posted here.
I have an older model VTF-Mk2 from 2005 and would like to knoe if I block both ports, will I have problems. I would like to try a sealed sound for music on an upstairs system and was wondering if this is possible without damaging the unit which has worked flawlessly for almost 5 years now.
Thank you

Dan, you can try this if you want, but you will lose significant output capability. Another thing you can try is to keep one port plugged, and set the bass extension switch to the '2 port open / 32Hz' mode.

I thought that I read not to do that as damage may occur?
Thank you for the response.

Dan, the situation that is potentially dangerous to the subwoofer [driver] is if one runs the sub with both ports open, but sets the bass extension switch to the '1 port open - 25Hz' mode. This means that the physical port tuning is above 30Hz, but electronic rolloff and protection won't begin until below 25Hz.
Sincerely,

Is there any simple way (other than tape) to lock it in place? I can imagine my kids, my wife, or some idiot at a dinner party flicking switches on it randomly to try to turn the sub off and hitting that switch by accident. I can't always be around to protect the sub.
How long in that condition before it starts to damage the sub or it is instantaneous???

Flipping the switch in itself is not going to damage the sub. The only time there is potential for some damage to the driver is if one is running the sub with both ports open, bass extension switch set to the '1 port open' mode, and the sub is played very loud with content below the port tuning frequency. That said, using some electrical tape might do the trick to keep the switch in the two port open mode given that one is running the sub with both ports open.

Thank you for your help. I will give it a try as I did not want to do it until you responded.

Can you try the same thing with the VTF2-MK3? Without causing damage?

Absolutely, one can try this on any of the VTF subwoofers...
