View Full Version : How can I get bass for my side speaker w/o addition of a 3rd sub?

I have decided to add side speakers to my maggie setup. The one I've installed are "one way" types with a low end response of 160hz. The bass management on my pre/pro only has large/small selection for surround speaker with a 80hz cutoff for the small setting. I was wondering if there is some way to hook something up into my existing 2 subwoofers so that I don't have to get a 3rd one just for the sides.

My current sub setup:

TN1220/500w amp w/51hz high/low pass crossover for my front L/R channels
10V/250w amp w/155hz high/low pass crossover for my center channel speaker, which also has a low end response of 160hz.

Rear speakers doesn't need sub because it's low end response is 80hz.

Options I thought of:

1. Run speaker level output from side amp to speaker level input of 250w amp of the 10V. The problem is that I can't adjust the level of the input because it is set based on calibration level of side speakers.

2. Split line level output of side speakers coming out of pre/pro and send one of them to something with a gain control and summing amplifier. Then send that signal to the unused line input of the 10V's amp. A receiver with a pre-out & mono switch would be something like that.

3. Using receiver in #2, run the L&R speaker output to speaker input of 250w amp of the 10V. No mono switch required.

#2 and #3 requires me to dig out an old receiver and have it take up space in my system. A PITA.

#1 requires some form of reduction in voltage. Can a voltage divider be somehow implemented in speaker level output? How about hooking some resistor to ground inside the 250w amp's speaker input stage to drop the voltage? These are all assuming that by default, the signal required for the sub coming from side channel's speaker level output would need attenuating.

Any of them realistically possible? Any other methods of hookup via the amp's line-in/all-pass/speaker in?

Or do I need a 3rd sub just to handle the 80-160hz range of these infrequently side signals?

What about using something like an Outlaw ICBM for bass management of all of the channels. I think it lets you do exactly what you want (different crossover and levels for each channel).

ICBM is for 5.1 system. I got an 7.1, unless I don't hook the front or rear to the ICBM.

Plus I think the ICBM's uppermost crossover freq is 120hz, not high enough for me to reroute the bass.
