View Full Version : How much can it take?

I have an HRSW12Va, big beautiful sub, and I really have only had it for half a year. Well as all of us do, we like to see what she can do. I did all that fun stuff on the test tracks with 16 Hz and everything played fine. Well tonight, I'm playing some John Digweed and there is a soft part in the song when a bassline creeps up on you, and its bass you don't hear, just feel. I swear it's the lowest stuff I've heard in my life. But anyway, I turned to woofer up to see if I could emphasize it a little more and when it hit, the woofer made a sort of popping sound, like something was hitting the wood cabinet or something. I repeated it again and sure enough it made the same noise. What the heck is it? The woofer is playing fine now and nothing appears to be wrong but I'm afraid of playing those deeeeep notes again. Thanks for your advice.

you are running it too hot I'd guess. Is it calibrated properly?

I don't know if it's callibrated or not. It is obviously a few years old and hasn't been played in a while so I can't say. I also have no clue as to how to callibrate it. Let me know what you think. Thanks a lot for the reply.

If you are not sure, then chances are it is calibrated too hot. This usually happens when calibrated by ear. You will need a dB meter to calibrate properly.

Hi Dan,
The two threads below have information that you might find useful to learn about calibrating the sub and the system--hope they're useful. A forum search on calibration produces other results but these are somewhat recent. Best wishes,
Nathan

I think for better or worse every sub owner does this no matter what brand they buy. We always have to test the limits to see what our subs can do, even if you're way over sane levels. Sounds like you probably just briefly bottomed out the woofer. So long as you didn't overdrive it up for too long a period, it should be just fine. Perhaps you have the sub set too loud, or are simply playing the music louder than is prudent.
Once you're sure you've calibrated your sub properly, your options are to play within the subs limits, add a 2nd matching sub, or step up to a pair of TN-1220s (or other suitably potent sub, but it's hard to beat the TN). I see one poster here wants more bass than a pair of TNs will provide, but even back when I used mains with a 102 dB/A/W/meter speakers, my pair was more than enough. It's hard to imagine the rig where two of them wouldn't be enough.

Just another side note. That Digweed track pumps out 17.8 hz and after calibration my woofer put it out at over 100 db. VERY NICE :)
