Receiver power

Hello all,

I have a question about receiver power as it relates to my listening room. The room is downstairs and has no windows. It's 16x25 and has French doors to the outside, a solid door to the garage, and another to a hall. It is carpeted and has a large desk. It is almost completely lined with bookcases and equipment racks and has an open stairway to the main floor. The latter is an open port to a large area; it can't be closed off. This is what leads me to wonder if the Onkyo 502 (75x6) will have enough power for my room or if I will need more punch. The speakers will be the VT-12 + VTF-1 combination. All opinions welcomed. :)

You have enough power. Most power demand is from the subwoofer and satisfied by the sub's amp. The VTF-1 has enough for all but the most demanding levels. Your room is not too big for it. The VTF-2 may make you more comfortable. my family room is comparable to the room you describe and I chose the VTF-2 to remove any lingering doubt. You may want to try the HSU online evaluator to confirm what you're thinking. Regards.

Thanks, Dave. I figured that 75/per channel would be enough for the room itself. I'm mainly concerned about the drain that the opening to the upstairs represents. The Odyssey Stratos in my main system has no trouble, but it's a beast. Your point about the VTF-2 is well taken.

You do mean the STF-1.If it were me I would go with at least the STF-2 in a room the size of yours.To be sure an e-mail to the good Dr. about a recommended size sub would help.

You're right, of course: STF-1. Thanks for the suggestion abt. the e-mail; I'll try that.

75 watts is plenty. The difference in volume by upgrading to 100 watts would not even be noticeable to the ear.
