I'm trying to put together my first HT and was wondering which sub would work best in my room. I will be getting the Ventriloquist to go along with either STF-3 or VTF-3. The HT will go in my family of 16' x 16' x 10' which has 2 openings to other areas.

a friend of mine recommended i get 12" since i have an open floor plan. The HSU 12" comes in two models and they look identical. What's the difference between the 2? Musically can u tell the difference btwn the 2? I wouldn't mind spending $100 extra if the VTF-3 has vast improvement over the STF-3. thanks in advance for your help.

Good day edm,

The primary difference between the STF-3 and the VTF-3 is that the latter has the ability to be variably tuned for either maximum output or maximum low frequency extension. The VTF series also has a tad more amplifier power, metal spiked feet, and has a choice of more luxurious finish options.

The STF-3 is a great value because it does justice to the vast majority of music and movie soundtracks available, for a reduced price vs the VTF-3.

If the VT12/VTF-3MKII combo is a stretch for your budget to begin with, and you do not think you will need the ultra low frequency response below 20Hz, then the VT12/STF-3 package deal should be perfect. If you have the extra disposable funds and are interested in experiencing lower extension below 20Hz, then the VT12/VTF-3MKII package would be ideal.

Enjoy

Peter, how much does the STF-3 lose (compared to VTF-3 low extension mode) around 20Hz?

Warpdrive,

Here is a review written by Howard Ferstler in The Audiophile Voice on the original VTF-3, where he compared maximum output mode to maximum extension mode. if memory serves me right, he noticed a 3db swing at 20Hz. In max output mode, the VTF-3 was 3db louder at 31.5Hz, and 3db's less loud at 20Hz, vs maximum extension mode.

Peter,

Would this -3db @ 20hz still hold true to the new VTF-3MK2 as compared to the STF-3.Seeing they are both of a newer design would this statement still be accurate.

Good afternoon wid,

The frequency response of the MKII subs should be similar to the MK1 versions. In other words, the VTF-3MKII will play down to at least 16-20Hz, depending on what tuning mode is selected.

Thanks for asking
