View Full Version : Question about cable/wire

I recently made some changes to my system; due to having too much gear for my rack (not a bad problem, I'd say;) ) I went with two racks. Problem is they wouldn't fit where I had the one, so I had to move them to the back of the room. Now my subs are hooked up with 40 ft runs of cable.

Here's the kicker: I didn't realize until I had literally everything else hooked up that the amps wouldn't reach the subs, so I did what any tightwad gearhead would do- I went to Home Depot and bought 100 feet of black jacketed 12 guage low voltage power cord!

My question is, will performance suffer using this type of wire for subs? And will I have any trouble running cable that far? I could cut the cable down to probably 33' and it'd still reach, but short of that I'll have to get long ICs and move the amps closer.

I must add that I've used my new setup for 3 weeks and haven't noticed any ill effects so far. Maybe I'm superstitous or paranoid because the wire is so cheap!

BTW, I'm not a big religious believer in 100 per foot boutique cables.

You are fine with 12 gague for the speaker level inputs. The thickness of the wire should depend on how long the run is.

Under 10 feet, 16 AWG or more
10-25 feet, 14 AWG or more
25-50 feet 12 AWG or more
