In considering the purchase of a subwoofer, I was wondering how long it will last. Of course it all depends on use, so I am obviously not looking for an exact answer. I figure that there are only a few things that can go wrong/bad. The surround, spider, and amp. In older speakers using foam surrounds, I have had to re-surround them due to drying out of the foam and turning to dust upon touch (Cerwin-Vegas circa 1970s). I have seen a broken spider, but I didn't think this usually happens and I am not sure the broken spider I saw happened during use. Finally, the amp seems to be a sensitive part for a number of reasons. The other useful information for me determining the lifetime of a subwoofer (or anything) is how long the manufacturer's warranty lasts. In subs, it seems the warrantys are sometimes divided into electronics and everything else with the former being short and the latter being quite long. I assume that a Hsu sub will last 10-20 years or more depending on the life of each of these components.

Does anyone have any comments as to the lifetime of subs, in particular Hsu subs?

Subadubdub,

I have had subs for many years and the driver never seems to wear out. Now, I am not playing LOTR or Matrix all day long every day. If anything goes wrong, its with the electronics (hence, the extended warranty offered by the manufacturers on the amps). And, the amps can be easily replaced at low cost. So, I am very comfortable with Hsu subs lasting a long time and look forward to having my VTF-3R Mark 2 for a very long time! You should feel comfortable and secure with a Hsu sub.

Anyone want to admit that their BASH amp went out in the first 5 years of ownership? Maybe this is a reason to buy new rather than B-stock.

Mine just went out after less than one hour at very moderate volume.

Mine went out a few months after purchase. Hsu sent a replacement which I installed and it's fine. Didn't really think about what I'd gotten used to hearing until it was gone for a few days!
