Setup Onkyo receiver, main speaker outputs connected to high level inputs on VTF-2 subwoofer. Dahlquist speakers connected to speaker outputs on subwoofer. This setup has worked fine for 3+ years, I have changed nothing in over a year.

About one week ago I started hearing an intermittent low-frequency "crackling" sound from the subwoofer with the receiver off. I turned off the subwoofer until this weekend. When I turned in back on (receiver was on at this point), the subwoofer started emitting a very loud low-frequency throbbing sound - I would estimate 5 "throbs" per second. Disconnecting the receiver had no effect - still throbbing. Changes to the back panel settings also had no effect - still throbbing. The current settings:

* Volume set to r oughly 1/4
* Bass extension switch - 2 ports open
* Polarity - 0 degrees
* Crossover - in
* Crossover frequency - 45 hz

Any ideas on what the problem may be or how to troubleshoot further?

Thanks,
Chris

Sounds like a bad amp. I would call and talk to someone at HSU to troubleshoot further.
