Hi all

I was hoping you could help me with some HT setup questions. I am looking to put a system in my basement, will be used mostly for movies and TV. I added a diagram of my basement below. Its a larger open area, but I am more focused on the area within the red lines (most important in the seating area).

The ceilings are 7 feet 4 inchs high. My plan was to add two HB-1s in front along each side of the TV and 1 HC-1 as my center. I was then going to put the sub in the corner behind the seating section. Down the road, I might put in two more HB-1s behind the seating to complete the setup.

What sub do you recommend for the given size? I don't want anything that will over power the room too much, but will also provide some growing room if I move down the road.

Thanks for your help!

Hi jolces,

I recommend getting the best subwoofer that you can comfortably fit into your budget and enclosure size constraints. Given that your room opens to a fairly large area, I would go with at least a VTF-2 MK3 or VTF-3 MK3.

Thanks, Pete. 1 more question. I was thinking of starting off with a 3.1 setup (with 2 HBs and 1 HC) and later expand. Any suggestions on AVRs? I was looking at the Pioneer 1019 and heard that Hsu may also be running Pio in the demo room. If so, why did you go Pio over the over brands?

Thanks

Hi jolces,

Dr. Hsu was able to find the Pioneer 1017 online for $300 ~ 1.5 years ago, so we tried that and really liked it. Then we got the 1018 for Blu Ray :) So the 1019 should be a very good choice. We also still like Onkyo, Denon, etc.

Sincerely,

Thanks again, Pete. Sorry for the ?s; I am an audio noob. One last thing, what type of cable do I need to run between the AVR and the sub? Looking at the photo of the sub, it looks like a stereo rca cable. Thanks

Hey jolces,

With any modern-day receiver, you will just need a single mono rca cable running from subwoofer pre-out on the receiver to either left or right low level rca input on the VTF subwoofer.

Sincerely,
