I have carpet in my basement which covers a cement floor. Should the VTF-2 be placed on a piece of hardwood so the carpet does not absorb all my sound?

I have my VTF-2 on a thin carpet and I have not noticed any degradation of sound. My old subwoofer however was. I think because the VTF-2 sits higher may be the reason the carpet doesn't bother it.

A carpet or throw rug is actually recommended by Dr. Hsu. Downfiring reduces the localization so subs can be placed very close to listeners, but the disadvantage is they might be placed on hardwood or hard reflective surfaces (although 60% of American homes are carpeted). For the same reason you dont want hard reflective surfaces to the sides of your main speakers, you don't want a downfiring woofer on hardwood. The carpet will not absorb much bass by any stretch of the imagination, it will absorb higher out of range frequencies and some vibration.
