I am a newbee and mostly a music (more specifically classical music) listener. My understanding is the maximum output is a better choice for me in the two modes, right?

In addition, what's the real difference between one port open and two ports open. Why with the extended mode, there must be only one port open and with the maximum mode, the two ports should be open altegether?

Thanks in advance.

read some of the reviews for the VTF-2. They go into pretty good detail describing the max extension VS max output.

Unless you need more output (read: higher volume levels), the maximum extension mode is preferable for music. That is the mode with one port open and the rear switch flipped to 25 Hz mode on the VTF-2.

Each port acts something like a big coke bottle that is blown into. When you blow into a coke bottle, a deep note is produced.

With one port uses the air from the driver along with the cabinet to reproduce the deepest notes. All the pieces of the puzzle contribute: the cabinet size, size of the ports, and amount of air.

With TWO ports open, the equations change and now the sub is tuned for less deep output but higher output levels. Its the equivalent of adding nitrous oxide to your car engine. ;)

So, each mode is a trade off between either output level or bass extension.
