Velodyne has "productized" their DSP technology in the form of the SMS-1. http://www.velodyne.com/velodyne/products/product.aspx?ID=15&sid=461w918p

It is an external parametric equalizer box, microphone, onscreen (TV) setup, auto EQ, with manual tweakability.

Hmmmmmm..... is this product a glimpse at the the direction the HSU/Lyrtech alliance is going in? http://www.lyrtech.com/investors/details.php?pkiddocument=191&types=N

Should I wait on HSU to release details and/or go to production? Become an early-adopter with the SMS-1 product? Life is SOOO complex.

I am thinking about getting an SMS-1. I figure if Hsu comes out with something that is better, there will be plenty of Velodyne fans that I could sell the SMS-1 to.

The Hsu/Lyrtech product is apparently some months away (see other posts here)

Before making a decision, check out the Behringer "BFD" products ($100-150 depending on model) and John Mulcahy's free Room EQ wizard software (but send him some Paypal $ if you do use it, he's a great guy to do this pro bono).

Overall, the BFD's probaby a little more work than the SMS-1 plus you'll need to add a RS meter (<$50), or calibrated mic and the proper (<$40) soundcard to use with your laptop/desktop computer, too.

But, for a couple of hundred bucks it is, at the very least, a highly viable and economic alternative solution to the SMS-1 until we get more info on the Hsu/Lrytech product.

I use Harman's RABOS with Behringer Ultra-Curve Pro and it works great. RABOS costs about $60.

A little more work is an under statement but it is a good setup.

Ok, I'm busted on this one :o ...the BFD setup certainly is more than a trivial process, but since Hi-fi/HT is one of my few hobbies, the labor hours were heavily discounted. I did enjoy the learning experience and the eq software is quite useful for other tasks beyond simple sub-eq (I'm using it to help with room treatments presently).

My kids think I'm a nerd, my wife rolls her eyes.

I have no doubt the SMS-1 is a good piece and a good solution for those who want eq for their sub with minimal effort/tweak saavy. It is certainly better looking than the BFD products with their blinding red led's!

Thanks for the thoughts.

I have used a Behringer feedback Destroyer (DSP1100). It is a GREAT learning experience, but very tedious to setup. MY interest in the SMS-1 is driven by its ease-of-use strengths.

However, I have installed John Mulcahy's software. It looks AMAZING. I may just trade my old BFD for a newer one supported by this interactive software.
