does anyone use one of these in an apartment building, or is a sub like this overkill for a smaller apartment.

I just ordered my VTF-2 last night and it should arrive shortly. I am an a relatively small sized apartment and it will be going in the main living area. I can let you know my experience with it if noone else here has it in an apartment. I think someone here will be able to answer you quicker than I can though.... If not, I will get back to you when it comes and I set it up. It came highly recommended and I can't wait to try it out!

I doubt it will be overkill since you can always turn the gain down. It really depends on the size of the room you are placing the sub in...uncloseable openings....etc.

The good thing about having a subwoofer designed for nearfield placement like ours is that you can place the subwoofer right next to you, effectively allowing the volume to be turned down. Since it is closer to the listener, you don't have to turn it up as much and neighbors will not hear it as easily!
