View Full Version : Setup to avoid auto on problems

I'm having problems with the auto on feature, my receiver is a Pioneer vsx-d912, speakers 5 asend 340's and sw vtf-2. If I set the speakers to small everything works fine except, my only xover settings ar 100 - 150 - 200. This leaves a mid gap that that I don't like. With the speakers set at large and the sw xover set at 60, nothing less than Lord Of The Rings wakes it up. I'm using the auto MCACC to setup the system then overroad it at Asends recommendation to increase to rec output and lower the sw vol. This didn't work and at HSU's recommendation I'm doing the opposite - It didn't work either. Short of disconnecting the auto off feature, what are my options? Y connector? Plugging the power cord into the recveiver? I would prefer not to have to open the sw and bypass the auto on.

Where is your subwoofer placed in the room?

If you switch the subwoofer to OUT, and the crossover to 100, and mains to SMALL, there will not be a gap and the subwoofer should be less sleepy. What will happen is the subwoofer will rely on the crossover in the receiver, so it may play some of the higher mids. If you place the subwoofer in front of you, directionality will not be a big issue.

The subwoofer is behind the tv so the idea starts good, the only problem is my receiver doesn't have an option for small mains and large surrounds. I'll try it for awhile on all small but I liked the speakers set at large better. Does a Y connector help this at all?

I would expect it to work OK as Sasha described if you set all your speakers to Small. In general, that is a good idea anyway, since it takes the bass load off your receiver.

Dr. Hsu said that the Y connector probably wouldn't help that much, but if all you need is a little bit, there is a chance it might work.

Thanks Sasha, your original recommendation worked fine. I wanted to give myself a chance to listen to the speakers in both large and small before deciding if I was satisfied. The system sounds GREAT, thanks again.

One other question, I think I've seen it here before but can't find it. My VTF-2 is setting directly on hardwood floors, would a piece of carpet under it be better?

Doug,

In this same section, go to the thread titled "VTF-2" started by VTrogue. Your question is answered there.....

Yes, we do recommend a piece of carpet or a throw rug. The subwoofer is designed to fire into a carpeted surface.
