What is the Q of the VTF-3 and TN-1220? I am considering the Magnepan 3.6s as my new main speakers, and wish to pair them with a sub. Everybody seems to recommend a highly dumped (low-Q) sub for the Maggies. So, what are the Q numbers of these subs in the max extension mode?

All of Hsu's subs have an overdamped alignment(low-Q), but have a high-Q design built into their amp so as to make the subwoofer critically damped (Q=0.5).

The important thing with the maggies is to set the subwoofer's crossover as low as possible. Not a big deal if you are using the sub in bass-augmentation mode, but if you are using the active crossover (in the amp or your pre/proc), set the XO to be no more than 50hz. Any higher, you will lose the magnepan bass characteristics.

Thanks, Lwang. That's good to hear... and interesting. Is there any other sub brand that uses an overdumped alignment with an amp compensation?

Hey Sushi, it's Sorny from the AVS forum...

Get yourself a pair of TN1220HO subs with the HSU 500W amp (or a single TN w/500W amp) and get the 2nd TN when funding allows. To do anything else just wouldn't do justice to those Maggies, IMHO.

Of course, I'm biased as I've got a pair to TN subs. :D

Our subs are over-damped systems. The Q you are asking about starts with our woofer, which has a very low Q. I believe the Qts is below .3. Then the amp compensates.

Many of our customers use Maggies and other electrostatic speakers, so our many customers can't be wrong!

My fronts are Definitive Studio Monitor 350s. Not quite as nice as what you are looking at, but they serve me just fine...
