Hello all..well i'm moving into an apartment in about a month..and had some questions about an STF 2 on the 2nd floor?

I'm not one for thumping my speakers to very loud music, however if we are watching a movie with some good bass...such as LOTR...will the people below be able to hear my sub..because its down firing?

If it is the case..does anyone have any remedies for this?

Sure. Set the sub on a table about 2' up in the air. I'd suggest trying it at home first but this should help. You might have to put rubber feet under the table legs. If you elevate your speakers as well you should be able to keep some of the sound from going through the floor. (If you're using bookshelf speakers that is)

Worst case, find out what kind of ceiling your neighbors have and look into accoustical tiles for a drop ceiling, or bass traps in your apt.

Do you have a house now? Set your sub on the second floor in a closed room and test it out.
