I am having 4 HIW speakers mounted in my celing (12 feet) very soon to complete a 7.1 system using all HSU speakers. This is my first sound system so I'm new to all of this. Wall mounting of these 4 is not possible due to windows and doors. Do you have any recommendations as to how the middle 2 and rear 2 speakers should be mounted in the ceiling?

Also, should I have the installer create a box around the speakers using 2X4's and plywood to seal it up or just leave the speaker exposed? There's blown insulation above the ceiling that will certainly find it's way on to the speaker over time. Thanks.

Hi ed,

Typically the side surround speakers are placed to the sides of the room and a bit in front of the main listening position, while the back surrounds are behind the main listening position (with less spacing between them compared to the side surrounds) or directly above the main listening position if the couch is against the back wall. For in-ceiling use, point the tweeters inward for the side and back surrounds.

Sincerely,

Thanks. What about above the speaker. Does the speaker need to be covered with plywood to close it in like it would be if it was wall mounted or is it ok if the back is fully exposed to open attic air. Aside from any sound quality concerns, I'm also concerned about the blown insulation that will sooner or later end up ontop of the speaker. Is that a problem?

Building an enclosure to house the drivers would be nice, but not completely necessary either. If you have any insulation very close to the back of the speaker, then maybe you can put a piece of cloth in between the speaker drivers and insulation.
