View Full Version : Any word on new drivers?!

Anybody (read Peter) know when the new drivers for the VTF3-HO will be shipping to those of us who already have the VTF3-HO but need the driver replaced because of its "popping" sound at certain frequencies with movies? I am absolutely impressed by my new sub but have to keep it on quite the tight leash so as not to produce this awful sound. I'm just anxious to really let it loose and crank it w/ some good movies.
It blends so well w/ music (which never produces the "pop") and continues to impress w/ movies, even at low level - but you can just tell that it wants to show off a little bit more!
Thanks in advance.

I certainly don't speak for Peter (though I've been accused of being an employee of HSU because of all the posting on audio forums I did when the original pre-order incentives were in place).

I might be completely off-base, however, it is possible that due to the fact that the amp in the '3HO has also been changed, you might receive a complete new unit, rather than a new driver and a new amp.

Peter should be clearing this up for you very soon.

Good evening rushwj!

200 XBL^2 drivers are being shipped to us as we speak, so hopefully within the next 1-2 weeks we will have them.

For those of you who already have a VTF-3 HO, if you have your shipping boxes and packaging material, then we will most likely recommend that you ship the entire subwoofer back to us so that we can update the driver and amplifier. If you don't have your shipping boxes and packaging materials, then we will probably just send a new driver and amplifier, and you can return the current driver and amplifier using these shipping containers.

Thank you all again for your patience, we are getting closer!

Sincerely,

Thanks for the info Peter.
How difficult will it be to change the amplifier and driver out?

Dear joe,

Yes, we will be fixing that too. As I think upon it, for those who do not have their shipping boxes and packaging material, perhaps we could just send a new VTF-3 HO subwoofer...and the older subwoofer can be sent back using the newest shipping box and packaging material.

And how easy is it to install an amplifier or driver? It's not too bad, we have some instructions here: http://www.hsuresearch.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2041 . However, if you have any misgivings about doing so, then the method I proposed above may just do the trick!

Take care guys!

Peter ... is shipping back something we can do immediately ?

Peter, thanks for answering all our questions here. Personally, I'd be most excited about the option where you send out the replacement sub and we use the packaging from that to send back our current one. Of course, i may be biased as this is my only subwoofer currently and don't want to go without it while it's being shipped back and worked on. Also, then we get one that has the corrected port tuning instead of installing a new driver and amp but with incorrectly tuned ports. This is quite exciting for me as there are all these upgrades/improvements! Please let us know as soon as possible how we will be able to do all of this and when!

Dear Craig,

Let's wait at least a couple weeks more. I will let you guys know when the time is right!

My pleasure, Bill, I think that option would be fine, especially for those who don't have their packaging materials. As long as Dr. Hsu is ok with it, then we can do it.

Have a great night all!

wasn't the amplifier upgraded too? have you guys had a chance to test out the new drivers? more performance, etc?

Good afternoon Joe!

We are still waiting on the new drivers. Should be here within the next two weeks I believe. Yes, we will be modifying the amplifiers too. The new driver has a very flat and linear BL curve, and is definitely very low distortion driver. For you, I recommend VTF-3 HO + turbocharger placed farfield and handling 16-50Hz, with MBM-12 placed nearfield and handling 50Hz and above. This will be the highest performance configuration. Mid and upper bass will have lots of headroom and sound very tight and punchy, while lower bass will be extremely extended and clean with essentially no audible port noise all the way down to 16Hz.

Cheers,

Hey Peter, do you guys have an updated release timeframe for this little MBM-12 bugger? It has piqued my curiousity :)

Not exactly, Jon...I am hopeful that it will be ready sometime within the next three months.

Sweet! That's narrow enough for me :)

(I must have forgotten/missed a previous post that mentioned that timeframe before....my apologies if I re-asked the question. and shouldn't you be out...not working..it's saturday! :p)

From July 24th......

About 3 1/2 weeks later on August 12th......

We are still waiting on the new drivers. Should be here within the next two weeks I believe.

I am still so baffled at this..... Back in June Dr. Hsu said they'd "probably" ship by the end of July.

Jerrod, it is taking a lot longer than we expected, and we have still not received them yet. We are expecting to receive something by month end.

Speaking of slow boats from China...an edit of a post on the shipping woes from last February:

...I thought I'd add some levity to this thread with some revised lyrics to an old tune (with apologies to Frank Loesser), especially for those bemoaning the no-show HO:

I’d love to get you
On a slow boat from China,
All to my self alone.
I'd plug you in to my system evermore,
Leave all the others
Thumping one note on some faraway shore.
Out on the briney
With your ports big and shiney,
Melting those hearts of stone.
I’d love to get you
On a slow boat from China,
All to my self alone.

I'm humming away, pondering the MBM whilst planning out fabrication of my "2nd system" IB manifold and waiting for good news.

The boat captain also have to "grease" all of the Chinese Officials in order to pick up the laborers, and these official charges the bribes by each box of Hsu drivers. Hopefully, the drivers will be here soon.

Driver issues are not unheard of in the industry. Especially in the subwoofer realm...or so it seems. Adire has several no-show products after an apparent factory relo to Chile. A couple of other net based driver e-tailers appear to have supply chain issues which have crippled their business. As many of you may know, the other guys apparently bought their suppliers drvier designer and took production inhouse. Not sure if that was a QC, supply chain, "trade secret" or strictly economics driven issue/decision, but it's indicative of the different directions companies are headed.

Hopefully the Hsu issue was strictly getting drivers delivered to spec, not an overseas production capability issue. I haven't jumped on board the mid-bass driver bandwagon yet, but I really respect what the Dr. and company have done for the industry and the way they have done it.

I am hoping for good news soon. It has been a long haul, despite having working, but not quite to spec, HO's.

Dear Bill,

We have the drivers now, but need to inspect all of them too.

Regarding the mid-bass module, the manuals are being printed as we speak. If anyone is hesitant about using one, think more about the huge benefits from such a setup: flatter in-room response in the highly important mid/upper bass (since reflections are minimized due to the high ratio of direct-to-reflected sound that comes from nearfield placement), much higher headroom in the mid/upper bass (due to having a large and ultra light cone woofer used specifically for mid/upper bass, and due to proximity to the main listening positions), and flatter in-room response in the lower bass (since there will be no dip in response due to nearfield positioning of a true subwoofer in rooms that are not extremely deep).

Sincerely,

JimLely

Hi Peter,

Is there a manual for the VTF-3HO that can be downloaded from your site?

Thanks,
