Resonating Cabinet??

Hi, I have a VTF-1 Sub and Recently noticed that the Cabinet is Resonating or Vibrating a little bit. the end result is a Cabinet noise I am NOT to happy with??

Is there anything I can do to stop the Cabinet from resonating as much?? Could I Add a Pillow in the cabinet or would I need to reinforce the Cabinet more then it currently is??

Nephilim, are you using the unit with spiked feet on a hard flooring surface? Do you hear the resonance with all program material? Try putting in the test tone CD and playing the test tones to see what frequencies you hear the noise. Try to identify what part of the enclosure that the noise comes from. Press down on the cabinet in that area to see if that affects the noise.

Hi Dr. HSU,

Yes I am using the spiked Feet on a Cement Floor with a throw rug..to use the Cd is a good Idea but I lost the paper that came with the Disk so I would NOT be sure what HZ the Cabinet resonates at??

Can you email me that Paper that came with the CD?? "jlaf2112 AT comcast DOT net" Or if someone can FAX me the Paper that would be Great as I am trying to reaquire that paper ;)

I mostly here it when the Bass is at a low Frequency the Song "Whoomp there it is" by TAG Team is a good example..If I press down on the top of the cabinet it quiets the noise?? that is mostly where the Noise seems to be coming from is the top of the cabinet??

Your issues sounds like the same one I had and HSU staff helpled me resolve it cheaply. I had a LOT of hard hours of use on mine over the years but the brace and gorilla glue helped. Maybe Pete will send you the specs on your sub and the brace should help out too.

Hi Nephilim,

On the test CD, I think that either track 9 or track 10 (ie. the first track with a warble test tone) is 16Hz, and then the higher tracks after that are 20Hz/25Hz/31.5Hz/40Hz/50Hz/63Hz/80Hz. So try playing tracks 12 through 17 on the CD to see at what frequencies you hear the noise. Also take a look at 95 Silver TA's thread, as a brace going from top to bottom of cabinet seems like it will significantly help, since you hear less noise when pressing down on the enclosure.

Welll I took out the Amp part and looked inside I am NOT sure I will be able to brace from the top to bottom as the Vents are on the top and the sub is on the bottom?? No room for a brace??

I looked at TA thread he said he had pics sent to him on where to put the brace?? Can someone at HSU send me some pics of where to put this Brace on the VTF-1??

Claude, do you mind posting some pictures of your modification?

VTF-3 MK2 is a lot like VTF-1 in that it has rear-firing ports at the top part of the enclosure, and down-firing driver.

Here a pic of the Sub Brace Pic. Its not of mine but of one that an HSU staff member sent me a few months ago. I have also included the instructions they sent at the time for the VTF3-MK2. Eventhough they recommend 2 braces, I put one in just because the other brace was cut too short and I did not have the time to get another piece of wood and re-cut (just being lazy on my end). I also added some Gorilla Glue to the inside corners of the top of the box (even though I did not notice any gaps as the email below stated). This little mod has worked really well and I have not heard a peep in terms of rattling or resonating since the mod.

Attached is a picture of the vertical wood brace that our technician recommended to you (note that the amp cutout is seen in the back of the picture).

The brace dimensions are: 18 and 11/16 " tall, 1 and 3/8" wide, and 3/4" deep.

We recommend using two braces, one as shown in the picture, and another brace that is a mirror image (next to the other port ) .

Place the brace 3" in front of the amplifier panel, so that the brace doesn't interfere with the PCB on the amplifier. Also make sure to remove any fiberglass in the top/bottom sections of the enclosure where the brace will be touching.

If you see any gaps in the brace that is holding the two ports, add some Gorilla glue ( all purpose type ) to seal the gaps.

Also How many watts can this Sub handle??
