I also heard the Robb Report mentioned HSU Research as a good choice.

AS1203 Review, Tom Nousainne, Oct/Now 2003 Mobile Entertainment

"the seat mirrors shake...on subtler sounds, such as Ray Brown's acoustic bass...the bow reveals true string and wood-body sound....Deep bass, high output, low price, works in small enclosures"

"I consider Hsu (pronouced "Sue") Research the least expensive way to get a high-output home subwoofer. Their quite affordable VTF-2 and VTF-3 models go lower and play louder than products costing three or four times as much."

Mr. Nousainne's in-car measurements for the ASW-1203:

Frequency Response: 9-116 Hz +/- 2.2 dB
Maximum SPL with three bass tracks: average 124.2 dB; maximum 126.1 dB (with "976-BASS" from Bass Ecstacy by Bass Erotica, on Neurodisc)

Steve Kindig, Crutchfield Advisor, July 15, 2003 (from the HE Sterephile Show in San Francisco)

"Another impressive demo came courtesy of Hsu Research — long known for their potent, low-cost subwoofers — who showed their aptly named "Ventriloquist" surround speaker system. Comprised of four micro-sized satellites, a somewhat larger center-channel speaker, and an 8-inch subwoofer, the Ventriloquist system sounded far larger than its modest size and $500 price would suggest. The subwoofer blended beautifully with the front speakers, yet it was actually positioned a few feet from my chair. I had no clue until the presenter pointed to it!"
