Here's a general drawing of my living room along with the surrounding openings. If I count all the area you see in the picture, it comes out to be about 4700 cubic feet. The ceilings are 9'. Also, the hall to the left of the couch begins closer to the couch. The sub could fit there but it would be close to being flush with the hall itself. There is also a door to the left of my tv and speakers so I can't put it there. The small stubs that are to the right of the tv and couch and also in the kitchen are small walls that sick out.
So, where would you recommend me putting my sub? I have a VTF3 MK2.

Send your drawing to Dr. Hsu and ask for placement suggestions.

I emailed both techsupport and drhsu so hopefully that i get a response soon. The drshu one may not exist, but I didn't get an email back saying that it failed. Do you guys have any ideas until then?

Dear Maximo,
I would recommend positioning the VTF-3 Mk2 in the back right corner.
Sincerely,

Dear Maximo,
I would recommend positioning the VTF-3 Mk2 in the back right corner.
Sincerely,
I suppose by back right you mean between the small wall and the couch. That is the most convenient place for me to place it, and the first that I'll try. I hope it works out. I can't wait to try this baby out! I've read so many people talk about this sub being very place sensitive (I suppose this could be the case with any sub) so I'm hoping that I don't have to put it in a crazy place to get a good response. Thanks

Another complication that I have is my rear speakers. Because the couch is touching the back wall, the rear speakers are very close to the listener. If I move my couch foward then I'm too close to the TV. Plus, they're bookself speakers with no mounting options, and they have a rear port. It would be very difficult to hang or elevate them in any way. Does anyone have any creative ideas on how to get the most out of my rear speakers. I'm using Athena AS-B1 for my rears. http://www.athenaspeakers.com/modelASB1.htm

I would get a pair of speaker stands for the athenas and place them to the sides of your couch. I've done that and it works pretty well. Stands in the 24-36 inch range depending on your preference.

This is how I have it set up now, and I suppose it's my only option. I currently have adjustable stands.

I have a similar room setup. I first had the VTF-3 on the right of the couch as Peter suggests. Then I pulled the couch 18" away from the wall and now have the sub centered behind the couch 1" from the wall with the ports facing the right rear corner. Excellent non-directional bass and the sub is out of sight (WAF).
What size TV do you have? Rule of thumb is 2.5 X the diagonal for HDTV so if you have a 50" TV you can sit as close as 10'.

I have a 52" HDTV. My room is only 13' across. If I pull the couch out 18", that might be too close. I actually like the idea because it allows me to put my rear speakers a little behind me as well. My wife will hate it though. I'll definitely give it a try and see.

Now that I have my sub, I've tried a couple of different placements. The back right corner and directly behind the couch. I still want to place it to the right of the TV and to the left of the couch and see how they perform. So far, directly behind the couch sounds the best. When the sub was to the right of the couch, I could really tell the bass was coming from that area. Putting it behind the couch has some what fixed this, but I still need to work on fixing the problem. Also, the bass is loud, but it really doesn't pressurize the room. This could be because the room is so large. I'm still very impressed so far.
Note: My sub didn't come with the manual. I think the guy forgot to ship it, but I'm not sure. Can I download it anywhere?

Did you calibrate the sub when it was in the different positions?

I haven't got a spl meter yet. I'm doing everything by ear right now.

many people set the sub too high when setting by ear....of course, if that's the way you like your bass, then no problem.

Are you running it in Max extension, or Max Output?
You may very well get more pressurization in Max Output mode.

Currently, I'm running it in max extension. Looks like I'm not going to get the chance to really try out any more modes. My neighbors were freaking after a day of music and movies like WOTW. I suppose that says great things about the sub, but it's bad for me because I don't get to play with my new toy. I'm moving in March so it's not too far away.
