I am acquiring a pair of Magnepan MGMC1 speakers that have been modified by Dave Hare of Stereo Unlimited in Walnut Creek California. What do i need to know in order for you to judge if the VTF-2 is a compatible sub. (The mod's do not extend the base)
STD Specs
Frequency response: 80-24kHz +-3dB
Sensitivity: 86dB/500Hz /2.83v:
Thanks,

Unfortunately you don't have any of the bigger maggies which has a more extended bass. One would generally ant the maggies to produce at least freq in the 40-60hz (depending on how heavy and deep the bass is) so that you preserve the open unforced sound of the maggies all the way down to the bass.
With these speakers and in a 2ch setup, it would be better if you run it via active bi-amplification instead of bass-augmentation. This would keep the ultra low bass out from the maggies, which will either the membrane to constantly move away from linearity region w/o any audible sound being produced (while cause other sound being produced by the woofer to be not to be as accurate) or even cause panel flapping. If you use a VTF-2, the low pass filter might be an equivalent substitute.

Hi LWang. Thanks for your reply. I'm out of my depth and I pretty much have no idea what you are talking about once you get to .....

The 80 Hz cutoff of the Maggies makes it a good match. I've had Maggie owners tell me they have had the success with the smaller maggies and the VTF-2.
If you are using a:
1) a preamp/amp setup
2) integrated amp with a "MAIN IN"/"PRE-OUT" linked with a metal jumper
then... you can use our High pass box to keep the bass out of the maggies, which should make them sound even better. Keep in mind that we do offer a 30 day trial and free shipping.

dharmatone,
What are the mods specifically done by David Hare, if I may ask? I am new to Magnepans and am getting a pair of MMGs in next week, but like the practicality of being able to mount MGMC-1s to the wall.
Btw, what are you using as an receiver / amp? I am considering the NAD 752.
Thanks,
Bruce

HI Bruce, they are massively modified and expensive (for me) and sound more like the 1.6's than the 12's. MY reference sound speaker the 3.6's.
I'm not a tech person - just ears. I can tell you that he adds some sort of sexy tweeter with a huge range, rewires them massively and puts them on about 18" stands (optional).
I don't know how much of his tweaking is identical to what other Mag owners do and how much is pure Dave. I understand some of his stuff is proprietary.
Bottom line is - for me, these came closer to achieving the resolution of the true ribbons while giving that big mag sound stage, also seem more forgiving of placement than std. Mags...and I couldn't find anything I liked hearing as well in the price range.
Haven't selected a new amp yet. I listened to tube and solid amps at Stereo Unlimited, but I know a couple of science guy AV pros who are adamant that for speakers like the MMG at other than exotic sound levels a powerful reciever like a Pioneer Elite 45 or Yamaha 1400 or 2400 will work - even though the manufacturers don't rate the speakers for 4 ohms. I'm clueless
Have fun.
