I was just wondering how a pair of the original HRSW10's would compare in frequency response, distortion and maximum output to a single newer model like a TN1220HO? Also, if the sound seems ok, is there any reason to suspect that the original woofers are about to wear out due to age? If there is a problem, are replacements for the original woofers available, or better yet, an improved 10 inch model that would still work correctly in this enclosure? Is ther anywhere to get the specs or owners manual on these original HSUs?
Thanks,

While I don't think we have the original manuals anymore to give out, we do have replacement woofers for your old sub, and will continue to have them in the future. These go at very reasonable prices. The 10 incher is well under $100. Unless the existing woofer breaks, there is no need to replace it now.

Will the new STF-10 driver be compatable with the 10 or 10v? I am asking because you said the STF-10 has a new rubber surround, which would make it much more durable.
Also, is there much difference between the STF and VTF drivers?

Yes, the new STF-2 (previously the STF-10) driver should work, as far as I know. The rubber surround will add durability, but since we now treat our foam surrounds on the VTF-2 drivers with a speacial coating they are predicted to last just about as long.
The STF-2 and VTF-2 drivers will be essentially the same.

Doesn't having a rubber surround as compared to a foam surround change the damping characteristics of the driver?
Why would the VTF-2 still have its foam surrounded driver when it could use the STF-2's?

One reason has to do with the business of running this company: we made a huge number of 10 inch drivers with the foam surround. In the past, when negotiating with builders we would make HUGE orders for a year or more worth of woofers, for example. The coating was a real great thing in that it added a lot of life to the driver. Now, with our upcoming lines, we are in a position to start over and make smaller orders. Now we have the ability to make fairily rapid changes yet work on a larger scale.

I too have a pair of these HRSW10's from '91 or thereabouts.
I'm curious if you've heard of anyone attaching these two together like I've seen done with the TN series? (one stacked upside down ontop of the other; or the same thing only laying down sideways)
I forgot to ask the Dr. this when I saw him at the Hi-Fi show this past June.
I'm currently using a Proton D1200 power amp for these. I've got them balanced/matched to my mains by using the Radio Shack db meter and the Chesky test CD.
I was watching The Lord of the Rings over the weekend with some friends over and I didn't think I had things as loud as I did, and about half way through the movie there is one part that lit up the peak lights on the Proton and one sub gave off a real good 'pop'. I have done this once in a great while over the years I've had these. But so far, no issues. They still fill in that area that my mains don't: 22 to 40hz.
People still scratch their heads when the realize what these round things are I've got. And when they pick them up; well they really are baffled =)
