Laughing out loud, Dave, no you did not spell it right, but close :D

Our friend Curtis Chang indicated that he will be stopping by at some point during the show, so it is a chance for everyone to meet the legend himself! :D

Peter-

Check with DR Hsu and see if they have any extra VTF-3 Mk20 boxes around the office. I will climb in one and you can ship me over to Vegas.

I had the opportunity to listen to the new HSU speaker lineup in their demo room on Wednesday at T.H.E. SHOW in Las Vegas. The configuration consisted of two VTF-3 Mk3s w/turbos, four HB-1s, one HC-1, and one MBM-12. It sounded awesome to my ears. So much so, that I am placing an order. Female vocal in stereo was excellent with solid imaging. You could "feel" the 16 Hz organ note from the Organ Symphony Saint-Saens demo. The "Animusic" drum scene was phenomenal sounding with the MBM-12. After the demo scene from the movie "Open Range," the person sitting next to me exclaimed it was the most realistic gun fire that he had ever heard from a speaker system. It was so realistic, you were "startled" by the sound. I did think that near-field placement of the MBM-12 added to the experience. It integrated seamlessly with the system and provided the mid-base "punch" described in HSU's product intro material.

I also listened to a number of "high end" and very expensive speaker systems while there. While several were impressive, I kept going back to the HSU demo room because the sound was just so satisfying. In my opinion, this system is hard to beat for music and Home theater.

I was also able to slip into the demo. This is all from memory, but someone might be interested. Corrections are welcome. I think observing how HSU Research sets up important demonstrations provides me a map of what I should consider first when setting up my room.

The demo was in a two room hotel suite with most of the furniture removed. The first room where you entered from the hall contained static displays of all the HSU products. I'll guess it was about 18' x 11'.

There was a large opening between the first and second rooms. I'll guess it was about 6' wide. The point is, this was not an ideal demo room situation. That offers great hope to folks like me with non-ideal rooms.

The second room was smaller, maybe 11' x 12' ish. There were 3 chairs along the back wall with just enough room to fit the MBM-12 behind them. Two HB-1s faced each other from the sides at about 40" off the ground, just behind the seats.

There were several panels of acoustic foam on several walls in both rooms. I'll wager none were randomly placed. The ceiling was standard drywall 8' high, the floors were carpeted.

One of the VTF3-Mk3's was actually in a closet with the door removed with ports facing left to right. The equipment was along side and included a feedback destroyer tuned to remove a (40Hz?) resonant frequency, and a digital time delay device to delay the MBM 12 signal. I don't remember any amplifier or DVD player specifics.

The HSU representative accurately described the entire configuration so the listeners would know what they were hearing. He made a special effort to point out that the line-level interconnects were typical type included with consumer audio devices (nothing fancy), and the speaker interconnects were (16?) gauge copper from Home Depot. I appreciated that very much.

Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the HSU representative I spoke with, but I'm sure he has all the exact dimensions and parameters. He mentioned he had spent a week with the room dimensions, modeling the acoustics to produce this demo. He also mentioned the Mac program he used for calibration, but I can't remember it either. If he choose to post a description of how he calibrated the system to that room, I'm sure many of us would be interested. He claimed the center seat frequency response was flat to 16Hz as a result of his configuration and tuning. I should have ask if that includes any sort of "house curve".

They used a business class projector throwing on to a smallish screen, It couldn't have been more than about 50" diagonal. The walls and ceiling were white (except for the foam panels) and the light were just dim, so the picture was certainly lacking.

The front HB-1's appeared to be on 40" stands, and the HC-1 was under the screen at the same height. Both VTF3's with turbos were behind the screen, one on the right corner in a closet, the other on the left not as far back. That's all the setup details I can remember.

The sound was very good. The gunshots in Open Range sounded like gunshots. I'm not sure that is great, because real gunshots hurt my ears so I usually wear hearing protection when exposed to them:p. The "echo game" from Flying Daggers sounded much better than other demos I listened to at CES. Many other demos used these same two movie clips, to my ears, the others sounded exaggerated and processed by comparison.

The organ music still confuses me. I heard some sort of "warbling", same as I do at home on my VTF2-Mk3. I know it's not the 18Hz tone, I suspect it is some sort of modulation or aliasing with one of the other frequencies in the music, anyway I hear a beat at about 3-5 Hz. I was just glad to hear it sounded the same, so I'm confident my equipment is working properly.

I'm no speaker reviewer, but I'll post my impression. To me the HSU setup sounded clear. Just clear. Uncolored, unprocessed, unfiltered, unmagnified, just clear and even. Sorry I can't be more help. On the plane home I read a magazine review of cables that described "chocolaty mid range" you'll have to go elsewhere for that sort of description.

Lastly, I have a few recommendations to HSU Research for future demonstrations.

First, more comfortable chairs. Bring your own chairs! The chair I sat on (right of center) was distractingly bad.

Second, good pictures make the sound better and vice versa. I appreciate the no nonsense approach to the rest of the audio components. I liked knowing the demo isn't skewed by other equipment. A good projector putting up a great picture would not have any potential to actually affect the audio, but it would make for a much stronger presentation.

Thank you to HSU research for allowing me to hear the demo.

P.S. Dr. Hsu was just as you might expect from reading his posts here gracious, unpretentious, straight forward, and of course very knowledgeable. Exactly the type of person I like to do business with.

Wow bvwj that was a great read.
Very complete and well put together. I just wished I would have had the time to go this year.
