View Full Version : Sub for my room layout

I am in the process of shopping around for my first real home theatre equipment setup. I have a very open floor plan where my TV viewing area is. It is opened to the kitchen in one direction and to the formal dining room and formal sitting area in another direction. I was wondering which Hsu sub would be best recommended for this space? I really want to focus on having optimal sound in the TV viewing area and I’m not concerned in filling this entire space (formal dining and sitting) with sound. The TV viewing area occupies a space that is about 15 ft by 18 ft with 8 ft ceiling. The floors are hardwood. The prime viewing location, couch, sits about 10-12 ft from the TV. The sub would be used for 75% HT and 25 % music. Also where would be an ideal placement for the sub? Will it be ok to set it up next to the TV console table?

Attached is a layout of the living space.

Thanks.

Hi devo,

This is a large volume of space to fill, so I would go for a VTF-3 MK3. Try to place it either in the front right hand "corner" (as viewed from the main listening position), or place the sub as an endtable on the right side of the couch.

Sincerely,

Thanks for the response Pete. I was afraid you would say that. Even though I’m attempting to setup a “real” home theatre, I feel like that sub may be exceeding the budget. How will performance be affected using an STF-2 or VTF-1? Again, I know this is a large volume to fill but I am more focused in quality sound in the TV viewing area (15ft x 18ft). Or does it become a matter of acoustic concerns since the area is so open?

Hi devo,

The subwoofer will have to fill the entire volume of space due to the long wavelengths involved in it's operating range. So going with a smaller subwoofer in a large space may result in less impact than one would want or desire. That said, it's hard to do much better than STF-2 or VTF- 1 for that particular size and cost, and having any good true subwoofer will be much better than having nothing at all!

Thanks Pete. You have been very helpful. I like the options both subs have. Out of curiousity, does Hsu have a combo packaged deal with the VTF-1 and VT-12 speakers too or does it only apply to the STF's?

Thanks again :) .

Hi devo,

We would be happy to give $50 instant discount when one purchases a regularly priced VTF subwoofer with the VT-12 speaker system.

Sincerely,
