I just received my Hsu VTF-2 MK3 subwoofer today. I plan on setting it up tonight. I read through the instructions and I see the recommended set up for the sub. But I saw no reference to receivers with the automated speaker set up such as my Onkyo TXSR-605 with the Audyssey system. Is there any reason I can't or shouldn't use the Audyssey set up?

Thanks in advance!

There is no reason why you can't run audyssey.
Sometimes it screws up the low frequencies and sets the sub too low. It did that for me, so I kept the Audyssey equalization settings and then boosted sub output in the receiver's bass management settings on my Onkyo TX-SR707. Now everything sounds great. I don't know why it set my sub output so low, I know it does this for other people as well. One explanation I have heard is that the cheap mic that comes with the receiver doesn't measure low frequencies very well.
You might give it a try to see how it sounds, after all you have nothing to lose.

Onkyo TX-SR605 has Audyssey 2EQ (http://www.audyssey.com/technology/multeq-solutions.html) and applies no filters or bass correction to the subwoofer. You'll need an SPL meter to calibrate the VTF-2 MK3 after you have run Audyssey.

I'm pretty much a rookie at this.
So if I run the Audyssey.....leave the sat. speakers alone and adjust the sub? I don't have a meter. Not sure I would know how to even run one properly. My room is 9' high, 16' X 16'. Is there a setting that would get me close? Like I said, I'm pretty much a rookie and can use all the help I can get.

Thanks!

So what did you boost your sub output to?

Thanks again!

I don't remember, I just set it to where is sounded about right to my ears. I always like to run the bass a little bit hot anyway. If I were you, I would run Audyssey, and if the bass is too quiet for your liking, turn it up from there, preferably from the receiver's subwoofer management settings.

Sounds good! Thanks for the advice.
I came home tonight and set the sats. to all the speakers to 80hzs. Turn the sub up to where I "thought" it should be. Turn on the movie "Rise of the Lycans." Sounded good until it got to the part where the lycans come storming out of the forest. Then the house started to shake!!!!!
I thought I better turn it down some. :)
