Would I hear or feel a difference between the following sub positions(VTF-3 MK3). Room size is 14Wx17Lx7.5H :

1.Next to right side of sofa with sub standing upright facing front of room and woofer facing the side of the sofa. It would be under an end table.

2.Next to right side of sofa with sub lying on its right side and the woofer facing upwards into the underside of the end table.

3.Next to right side of sofa with sub lying on its front side and the woofer facing the sofa and the rear ports facing upwards into the underside of the end table.

How much clearance would both the ports and the woofer need? Which position would be best for HT use only? Any pros/cons of each?

Bob, I would probably go with option 1. The ports need at least 3-4" of spacing between the flare and the surface next to it, while the driver needs at least 2-3" of spacing.

Take care

Peter,
Thanks for the reply. In option 1, how much room would I need to leave between the top of the sub and the bottom of the end table? Is there any advantage to having the woofer face the sofa(ex. more "feel" of the lower bass)? Also, would there be any negative effects laying the sub on its side as in option 2 if there were 5-6" of clearance under the table?

Thanks,
Bob

Hey RLB

Yes there is an advantage of having the woofer firing directly into the sofa. You will feel low frequency effects much more. Have you ever sat in a chair or sofa that had bass shakers installed?? This is what it will feel like if you set it up this way. People spend a lot of money on bass shakers for a reason....it dramatically increases the feel of the bass. With your MK3 you wont have to spend the money on them, fire it into your sofa and enjoy :) thats what I did!

I'd like to have a VTF-3 on each side of my sofa. Would be cool if you could get the driver on the other side of the enclosure.

As long as the VTF subwoofer fits underneath the endtable, then you should be ok. There really doesn't need to be any extra space in between.

I'm not sure that I would want to set it up so that driver fires into the endtable. It would be better to fire into the sofa for more direct impact.

Hope this helps!

If one doesn't use turbocharger, they can flip the VTF-3 Mk3 and VTF-3 HO subwoofers to have drivers firing on the opposite side.

I'd want turbos on both sides. :)

I can understand the logistics of not offering something like that.. but it would be cool to be able to get a mirrored pair.

Thanks for the replys. Now I just need to find an end table > 22" high :D.

How about using the subwoofer as an endtable? :) It's a perfect height for that task...

I have thought about that but am afraid that whatever is on there will vibrate off:). Also, the wife would like a real end table.

I wouldn't worry about vibration of the enclosure, Bob, these enclosures are pretty solid! However, if the wife wants to use something else, that's fine too!
