View Full Version : Question for Pete on Dual ULS-15s

Hi Pete,

My situation has changed a tad from my last post titled "VTF-3 MK3 as an end table plus other questions." I'm going to clear out room in the front left corner of the living room for a sub. After reading the responses from that thread, along with your online manual stating that rooms less than 15' wide should have the sub up front, it seems like a better idea.

I would essentially like to know the advantages of stacking two ULS-15s versus placing them side-by-side. I really only have room to stack the subs in this small area. If I place them side-by-side, I won't have room for my brand new left main speaker. I also don't have enough room to place one by the right front speaker.

Also, does it matter what direction they are faced? ie., could I point one sub in one direction and the other at a 90 degree angle? Both at a 45 degree angle from the corner, etc.

Thanks Pete!

Hi Ross,

Stacking subwoofers is acceptable, particularly if one uses a crossover no higher than ~50-60Hz. If one crosses over significantly higher than that (say, 80-100Hz), then there is greater chance of a floor bounce effect which will affect the frequency response in that range.

Regarding orientation of the subwoofers, when stacking I would recommend having the drivers fire in the same direction. You can certainly experiment by having each woofer fire forward, or backwards, or sideways though. Most people set it up for best aesthetics.

Sincerely,

Thanks Pete,

Not was I was hoping for as a response though since I would probably cross them at 80hz. Tell me this, what sub(s) do you feel would best fit my needs for primarily home theater use?

To re-iterate the other thread:

Living room is 14' x 12' with an 8' opening into a dining room (13' x 13'). Using your wall schematic where wall 'A' is North and 'B' is East, the sub(s) would be placed in the corner of wall 'A' and 'D'. The opening to the dining room is on wall 'B'.

My choices (or what I can get into the space):

1 - ULS-15 (or 2 stacked)
1 - VTF3
1 - VTF2
2 - VTF2 (side by side)

The front speakers are Paradigm SE's.

Thanks again Pete,

Ross

Hi Ross,

You are able to fit two VTF-2 MK3 side by side?

What are your width/depth/height constraints for a subwoofer?

Thanks

Hi Pete,

From wall 'D' to the entertainment center is 39". Within that space though, I need at least 9" for one speaker. The speaker is only 6" wide, but I want a little room in case it needs to be toed in. So that leaves me ~30".

From Wall 'A' to the edge of the couch is ~34".

Height is not an issue.

Two VTF-2s would fit comfortably with proper distance clearance for the rear ports. Two ULSs though won't because of the speaker constraint.

Thanks Pete,

Ross

Thanks for the info Ross! Any chance that you can move your couch 2" out along wall A, so that you can fit two ULS's side by side? If not, then I'd just go with a single VTF-3 MK3 as the most cost-effective solution.

Pete,

Thanks for all of your help over the week. I moved some stuff around and now have room for 2 ULS-15s. One would go on each side of the entertainment center.

My last question on this thread is whether or not it's okay to set my mini-towers on top of each sub. So, is it? I would use some of the grip fabric in between so that nothing moves around.

Thanks Pete!

Good to hear that you have made some space, Ross! It should be fine to set them on top of each ULS, with the soft padding in between.

Thanks

Glad you finally decided on the Dual Drive. BTW you could maybe try these between the sub and the speakers: http://www.auralex.com/sound_isolation_mopad/sound_isolation_mopad.asp

Hi geek,

I'm almost there geek,

It's going to be between 2 of the ULS-15s or two Paradigm Sub 12s. I'm currently looking for input from anybody who has possibly heard both. I'm not getting my hopes up. LOL I've heard the Sub 12s, and they sound nice, but would like to hopefully get other impressions.

Besides that, it's just a matter of either buying the Rosenut-colored sub, which would have to match my Paradigms, or the black.
