Question:
What HSU sub is comparable in size, anesthetics, price and performance to the SVS SB12-Plus / SB12-NSD? The USL-15 is out of my budget. Are there plans to develop a USL-12?
I have been reading every forum and review on subwoofer this past month to find what subwoofer works for me, my wife:mad: and my budget. Overall I always find myself drawn back to HSU and I have been drooling over the VTF-2 MK3. Unfortunately, my wife isn’t too crazy about the size of it once I mocked up the dimensions with a cardboard box. Based on the size, I’m forced with going with the Walnut finish which isn’t on sale and already cost more as well as my wife isn’t too supportive of it becoming a piece of furniture in the room.

Hi bkrummel,

If you need a relatively compact subwoofer, and the ULS is out of your price range, then I recommend looking at the VTF-1. We have the VTF-1 available in Walnut wood veneer, and the enclosure is relatively compact too compared to our larger subs.

Hi, bkrummel:

The subs you listed are too small, sealed, with not so much power fed to them to actually be compared to the big subs HSU or SVS have...
I strongly recommend you get a ported sub like VTF-1 or up, if you cannot get the budget for a ULS...
Anyway...what is the size of your room?

Thanks,

Hi Cacimar,

The sub will be going into an area that opens to the kitchen and dining room area. The total cubic feet of the area is 4450 which is on the high side of the loudness level 3. I've attached an image of the layout and dimensions.

Thanks for the help!

Luckily you're seated against a wall, and that's a pretty efficient place for bass, especially seeing as how you are placing the sub in the corner. For a room of that size a VTF2 or 3 is usually recommended, but I do think you might get some pretty nice bass from a VTF1. That is just my amateur estimation though. Hopefully Pete can confirm my hunch regarding your situation.

hi, bkrummel,

Nice space...That is good room info.
I would recommend a VTF-2 Mk3 for that space man!
If the budget and space allows...A vtf-3 mk3 would be great!HEHEH

Hi Brian,

The front right corner (as viewed from the main listening position) that you have proposed for subwoofer placement is excellent, and my preference. Ideally one should get a large 12" ported subwoofer for this space at a minimum, but if there are strict budget and/or enclosure size constraints, then it will be hard to do better than the VTF-1.

Thank you everyone for your help. I think I will go with the VTF-2 Mk3 in maple once I save up enough. My wife is starting to warm up the idea so it won’t be long to join the rest of the HSU owners.
Is the walnut the closest finish to the Polk RTi in cherry?
