Hello all! My name is Jeff. And this is my first post on HSU. I am a member of avsforum as well. I just wanted to introduce myself and let all of you know that I will be a fellow HSU subwoofer owner in the very near future. Well as soon as HSU can get my VTF3 MKIII to me, that I am getting ready to purchase today. For comparative purposes, I am a current owner of the PB12-NSD. Great subwoofer but I feel that the HSU might be a step above it so I am returning it because I am within my 45 day window and getting the HSU. Hope I am not dissapointed. I had a couple of questions that I hope can be answered.
I am really trying to decide between getting the turbo or not. The reason I have decided on going with the HSU over the SVS is because I have always heard how musical, accurate and articulate HSU subs are. And even though I would say that I am 70% home theater and 30% music, the first test I always use on a sub is with music. The way I look at it is if a sub performs good with music, it should do just as good with movies. So with that said, I want a very detailed and accurate sub not a boom box or one note wonder.
I have heard good things about the HSU's with turbo, my question is does the HSU with turbo sound as detailed and accurate as it does without? Will the sound be boomy or muddy on music with turbo? Will I have to detach the turbo when wanting to play music? Or can I leave the turbo on and set the sub to max output? Do I plug one of the ports on the turbo to tighten things up when wanting to play music? I really don't want to attach and remove all the time. I want to set it up and leave it alone, so the turbo stays on it if I get it.
Is the turbo going to give me deeper extension at the expense of clean and articulate bass?
Thanks for all of your help.

Welcome to the forum Jeff, it's a real pleasure to have you here!

I'd say that if budget is already very tight even at $649 for the VTF-3 Mk3 without turbo, then no need to go for it at the beginning. If you have a slightly larger budget, then it is a good investment to go with the turbocharger. Even if you decide that you ultimately don't need it, you can always sell it for more than what you paid at time of purchase!

The subwoofer should perform very well for music with or without turbo. Using turbo will make a noticeable difference with content that has very deep bass (20Hz and below) such as pipe organ music or various effects in modern-day movie soundtracks.

In the future, you can save up and eventually get the MBM-12. A VTF-3 Mk3/t or VTF-3 HO/t with MBM-12 is good enough to challenge even the most highly regarded and expensive subwoofer systems out there, for music or home theater. Here you will be able to let the true subwoofer handle the deeper bass, and let the module handle mid and upper bass with ultra wide dynamic range.

If you don't mind, may I see a rough sketch of your room? I'd like to evaluate the placement options that you have.

Thank you very much!

Sincerely,

Jadams

Peter,thanks for you reply.

I think I am just going to go with the VTF3 MKIII with turbo. It is only $130 extra with shipping. Can I fax you my room dimensions? I have a very wide open room. 20ft vaulted ceilings and my main living room where the sub would be is also ajoined by my dining room area. No wall between the dining room and living room. I am sitting about 11ft away from the sub. And I do plan on getting the MBM real soon after the MKIII purchase. So with that said, I really do want something that will also play very deep and let the MBM handle the upper bass frequencies.
