Hey everyone, what's up? My name is Phil and I'm new to the forum, I hope I posted this in the right category. So lately I've been trying to put together a audio system that fits my budget (university student) that still sounds good (and can handle some party use) Right now I'm looking for some advice on selection of speakers that would give me the best bang for my buck. I'll probs be using a vintage Nikko Alpha II amp and Beta II pre (but maybe a Kenwood 208 amp) My speaker choice in the under $100 have came down to a set of Technics sb cx700's or Sansui SP-X7900's.I have read some reviews on stereo speaker (http://www.stereospeakerreviews.net)and some say they are worth the money and some say they arent. I still can't make decision. Any thoughts?

I would look on eBay and find a nice set of speakers from the 70's or 80's. For partying: JBL, Altec Lansing, etc. Craigslist can be good too.

The speakers I had through college were >$400 list and with alot of negotiation I bought them for around 250 in 1989 which was a very good value They are the "Legacy II" by Advent which was a potent speaker transitioning to a new ownership (Jensen?) that hadn't screwed up the products yet. They go for $100 or less on e-bay now and properly oriented seem quite potent. They acted as a deterent in speaker wars: Junior and senior year our neighbors worked in a bar and would play their S#@t music late at night. I just had to turn up the Advents to blow their speakers away. The same speakers also gave sound fidelity that friends whose parents had real systems would refer to them as "real speakers." I remember when I first turned them on and my father compared them to his old JBLs... He suggested I keep them at home for safe keeping until I was out of college. Those speakers are now in a separate room, but still sound good even though I have a modern >$3000 system in my living room with Hsu sub, Ascend speakers, Denon receiver, etc.

Just be careful to buy reconed speakers or not pay full price if you have to get them reconed. Reconing is $40 or less. The earlier era Advents will probably in longer term have better resale value and sound good or better.

Now, if you want accurate detailed sound with a good amp and paired with a room shaking but musical sub for movies and really deep bass I would suggest you spend more for modern speakers and subs (B-stock if you still have a budget constraint)...
