See the string of emails below to tech support, I want to get a VTF3 but cannot decide if I shoud get the 3, 3/Turbo or HO. I have decided on the sub being behind the sectional couch in the back right corner of the room. Room dimensions are 20Lx15Hx9H. Front wall is full, right wall has two windows. No wall on the back except for 3 feet on the right to form a small corner, where I want the sub. Left wall is 12 feet. Room is sunk at about 1foot. Beyond the room it is open to the rest of the house. My plan is to put the sub in the corner, but if the port is facing the back corner could this cause problems, or shoud I get the turbo to push the air back at the couch, that way the speaker it self is facing away from the wall?

I think the word document with the room diagram uploaded, I am new at this.

Any thought would be appreciated.

When you say fire the sub directly into the back of the couch, does that mean set it up right with the ports facing the couch, or place the sub face directly into the back of the couch, which will not work becasue I do not want the amp facing out. Also, is the extension of the VTF-3 HO that much greater than the VTF-3 MK3 w/ a Turbo? Would these two be over-kill or should I follow the original recommendation of the VTF-3 MK3? I ask that, because I don’t want to be disappointed and do the hind sight “I should have just sucked it up and bought the more expensive model.” Also, I am an avid “Sound and Vision” and “The Perfect Vision” Magazine reader. Why is it that HSU does not seem to get any reviews there? I am also considering Klipsch and the Definitive Technology Super Cube 1, what differentiates your subs from these particular company’s?

Thanks in advance, I truly appreciate the quick response I have received.

A VTF-3 MK3 directly behind the couch is best. Fire the woofer into the back of the couch. Leave 2" spacing between the woofer and the back of the couch.

I am in the process on re-vamping my old Surround Sound System in my Family Room. Room dimensions are as follows 15ftwide x 20ftlong x 9 foot ceilings. The 62” DLP TV sits on the far end 15ft full wall with right side being one full wall (20ft) with windows and the left side is a half wall (~12 feet). The back end is open to the foyer. Essentially the room size is 15x20 but does not have half a side wall or back wall as it is all open to the rest of the house. The couch is a sectional that sits with the main portion at about 2 feet from the back of the room and up the right side wall.
I want in walls around the plasma L, R and C or a center on top of the cabinet below the Plasma, to replace the DLP, and in-ceiling for LS,RS,LRS, and RRS. 7.1 of course. Will I have a hard time matching any of your subs the sub? I have not picked out the in-walls yet, but m contemplating Definitive Technology, Klipsch and Niles. Your help and comments are greatly appreciated.
What would your recommendation be for a room this size? In addition, best placement? There is space behind the couch on the right side and it would fit nicely as there is a 2 foot wall directly behind (closet of the FOYER). I believe my two options are front left or back right behind the couch, thoughts?

Good morning dsully,

What Dr. Hsu meant was that you should place the VTF-3 Mk3 sideways behind the couch so that the woofer fires directly into the couch (about 2" of spacing in between woofer and couch). Note that the woofer is sidefiring, so all you need to so is turn the subwoofer sideways to achieve the effect. Let me know if this is still not clear.

Extension between VTF-3 Mk3 and VTF-3 HO is very similar. Port tuning is exactly the same. If you are already stretching your budget, then it makes sense to go with the Mk3. I don't think you should feel any regrets. If so, read the current issue of The $ensible Sound (see www.sensiblesound.com (http://www.sensiblesound.com) for the cover page)!

Sincerely,
