and I'm super proud of my new VTF-2 MK3 purchase. I'm working on placement right now. Space is an issue and I'm wondering if the current location is a good place to start. The sub is 6 inches from the side and back walls. Here's a pic

Welcome to the forum Irrob!

This looks like a good starting point to me. May I ask what are your room dimensions (HxWxD)? Does the room open to any other areas of the house, and if so, what are those dimensions? Finally, how far from the front wall are you sitting?

Thanks

Sincerely,

Irrob

Hi Pete, the room is 9h x 11 1/2w x 10 1/2d. I sit 8 feet from the front wall. The back of the room opens out to the foyer, which is 9hx 11 1/2w x 8 long.

So far I set the sub to max extension, set gain to 9:00, phase at zero and crossover to out. I ran Pioneers MCACC which set the level to -6! I have not played the test CD yet. But I played the Dark Knight prologue which was incredible, especially in the soundtrack. Hearing deep lows I never knew existed.

here's the back of the room

Pete/Irrob,

How effective is this with your subs? I'm pretty happy with my VTF2 MkIII, but always interested in ways to refine the sound. Would like to hear your thoughts on this. And is the surface strong enough to support the sub with spikes? It looks like the spikes would sink into the foam??

Thanks,

Barry

Excuse me for chiming in (since I'm not Pete or Irrob) but I am using a VTF-2 Mk 3 and it sits on an Auralex Gramma. I have not compared the sound with the Gramma versus on carpet but I have had a couple of subs in the past (not Hsu) and the bass did seem tighter and more precise with the Gramma. Also, the spikes don't sink in - the Gramma is pretty sturdy although if you ask me, it is overpriced. I'm not a handyman and there really aren't any competing ready-made products so for me it was worth spending the money for it.

Right on all counts. :)

Just a follow up. I'm the proud owner of a second VTF2. I'm quite pleased with the placement. Getting more even bass in the room. My ultimate goal is to smooth out the entire room with a four sub configuration. But I must be patient. This hobby can make your pocketbook say ouch. :D
