Hi everyone on hsu forums.
I been told to come here for tech support on another forums.
I have a 3.1 system with hsu hb-1 mk2 and there matching center channel plus vtf-1 sub woofer. I am very please how my system sounds, although my sub woofer hasn't been sounding like it should. I got this system back in 2009 or 2008 can't remember. Any how when i had my system calibrated and balance via mcacc and sound pressure meter the vtf-1 sub woofer sounded strong during movies. But i notice that the bookshelves over powers the sub during music listening. i like to have my receiver cross over set at 150 hz for music. and during movies i set it back to 80 hz. So my question is this, When i listen to music in "stereo" the bass isn't there it sounds like it's very low, but when i switch to dolby music the bass comes to life. Is this some thing i'm suppose to expect when using bookshelves speakers to loose some of the lower end? I am new to bookshelves systems. any help be appreciated. ps: Am i use to how towers sounded?

Hi LostGeek,

Make sure that all your speakers are set to 'Small' on the receiver. We normally recommend using an 80Hz crossover all around, as the subwoofer can become directional above that frequency.

Where are you currently placing the subwoofer? May I ask what settings you have on the back of the sub amplifier, and on the receiver for crossover/distance/channel level?

Thanks

It sounds like your diproblem may be in how your pre-pro/reciever handels bass management on stereo sources.
What pre-pro/reciever are you running ?

I've also got a VTF-1 prolem.
My sub is about 8 yeas old and I suspect that the amp is shot. I get a loud hum even when the input cable is unpluged and only the power cord plugged in. Any bass input only produces a loud chugging sound. Do I need to replace the Amp ? If so, how do I get one?

LostGeek, are you running the system in 'Pure Direct' mode when listening to music?

When you balanced channel levels using an SPL meter, did you use our test tone CD?

How do your 2-channel sources sound when the crossover for all speakers and subwoofer is set to 80Hz?

Thanks

Sincerely,

I did use your hsu bass test cd following the spread sheet instructions.
I played the 50 hz tone and adjusted the sw as follow on spl. It's not that big of a deal,i only listen to music once in a great while. But i was kinda concern.
But no,just using the straight stereo no pure direct sound. I did play around with the 80 hz and i couldn't here any different in volume. the speakers still over power the sub. only that matters it sounds great during movies.

That is definitely a bit puzzling. If you invert the phase switch on the subwoofer amplifier, do you notice a positive or negative difference with music?

At least on the surface, it seems that if anything your subwoofer would be running "hot" relative to your mains (based on the channel levels on the receiver), but if the subwoofer level was adjusted correctly using a sound level meter, then it should all be in balance. One thing I should point out is that most music has very little deep bass content, so the effect from the subwoofer will be very subtle. All the bass should sound like it is coming from the main speakers in a well-integrated system.

May I ask what are your room dimensions (HxWxD, including that of openings to other areas)? Where is the subwoofer placed, and where is the seating position relative to side/front/back walls?

Thanks

My bedroom is about 10x13 with 12ft ceilings.
Here's some photo attachment of my room setup.

I couldn't find a manual online for the Elite 92, But I would suspect that It's bypassing the bass management when set to stereo. Some processors/receivers have a bypass mode that does this and most will bypass automatically for phono and tuner inputs.
Sorry I couldnt be of more help.

Not a problem at all,i found out that if i enable the tone control and boost the bass to 3+ db it did help a little bit. but sounds boomy.

LostGeek,

I can't help you with your sub trouble. I just wanted to say your set-up with the VTF-1 sub, HB1 MK2 and HC-1 MK2 speakers is quite impressive. Very nice! :)
