Hi Pete,

It seems I've gone over budget a bit with my home theater plans, but I still want a VTF2 mk3. It looks like my in wall speakers are going to be fairly inexpensive, though...what is the highest I can set the crossover on the receiver and still have bass coming from the sub sound right? I've heard conflicting things about directional bass... from 80hz to 100hz and even an article that said up to 130hz was nondirectional. Also, will the VTF still sound alright if its handling frequencies up to 100hz or 120hz? Thanks a lot for the help.

Hi SSJ,

Ideally one should not set the crossover frequency higher than ~ 80-90Hz with a single subwoofer. That said, if the subwoofer is placed close to the main speakers, then one may be able to get away with a higher crossover frequency. The problem with subwoofer placement near or in between the main speakers is that this is usually not ideal for deep bass reproduction. That said, feel free to experiment with subwoofer crossover and placement to see what works best with your main speakers.

The VTF subs have a flat response out to 200Hz and beyond, but if the crossover is set too high, then the subwoofer may become localizeable.

Sincerely,

Thanks for the response, Pete. Is there any particular frequency test disc you guys recommend that I could use to see if these speakers are able to reproduce 80hz? I've heard an 8 inch speaker should be able to but I'd like to be check...I guess I could just let Audessey do it.

Also, how long does it take from when a person orders to when a VTF2 ships?

Thanks again for all the help!

Hi SSJ,

The test CD with the -2 MK3 will have 1/3 octave-spaced warble tones from 16-200Hz, so you can use that.

Provided that an item is in stock, then it should ship out within one business day.

Sincerely,
