I'm wanting to replace my AR HC6 system which is a great value but unfulfilling. I love my Hsu STF-2 in our main system upstairs and considered the Ventriloquist system, but reviews indicate I might be disappointed with music - especially the highs. I just ordered an STF-1 to replace the AR sub, and hope it's enough of an improvement without replacing the others. Does anybody have opinions of what other mid-priced surround speakers might complement my new sub?

the vt12 is a giant killer. I have 2 sets. Who ever told you that it isn't musical? You do know that Dr Hsu designed it don't you?

Have you read the reviews?

I'd be interested in seeing what review said you would be dissapointed with the musical performance. Most everything I read before I got my system said for the size, you couldn't beat it. If you want bigger performance, you have to go bigger speakers. Something about physics.

Here are a few reviews where I'm drawing my conclusion from:

I'm not saying the VT-12 system isn't a great little system - even a giant killer - but it sounds like it's a little lacking on the top end, especially with music. The AR system I'm dissatisfied with gets rave reviews too, but it clearly has limitations. Hence I've bought my 2nd Hsu sub and might be replacing the whole setup. Hopefully it complements them well though and I'll be set.

I had similar reservations about the Ventriloquist system before I heard it, but the size of the satellites, cost of the system, and excellent front soundsatge won me over. I think one of the best things in that the center channel really shines with dialogue and blends so well with the right and left front speakers. If you are looking for a music only system then of course there are better systems out there. I find surround music very pleasing on this system. I know there is some detail missing in the high end, but I certainly don't miss it when watching TV with a brightly mixed soundtrack.

It may be challenging to find a smaller system out there that sounds better at any price. I think that Orbaudio looks interesting(have never heard them), and has a high WAF. That also is a single driver design so the highs may not be as detailed either. It also costs quite a bit more.

Is small size the biggest issue or is an extended high end more important to you? It may be hard to have both without giving up the excellent midrange that makes the VT-12 shine.
