my room is small probably 11x11x10 (doors/windows mostly stay closed). i have an analogue stereo amp(onkyo tx8255) with no sub/pre out and bookshelf speakers(monitor audio br2, rated 42 Hz - 30 KHz)

i listen to rock/metal/heavymetal music mostly at medium to low volumes, so dont need loudness or too much power

my concern is if i add a single sub will it effect the sound stage or imaging because of the third mono channel. because if i set crossover to about 80 i think part of bass guitar or drums will come through the sub.

or should i go for two subs in stereo.

2ndly will stf1 with smaller speakers be faster than stf2? my amp is very warm and bass seem to lag slightly. if so then should i compromise on stf2's extension and go for stf1

thanks in advance..

I'd recommend 2-STF1s, or a single STF1 dead center of your listening position. I currently have a single STF1. I originally had it corner loaded. Though I couldn't exactly localize the bass, it did seem somewhat heavier to the side where the sub resided. I now have it dead center of my listening position and any hint of localization is gone.

The STF2 is good too. I doubt the 1 is any faster than the 2.

I can assure you that even a single STF1 should be more than ample for low to moderate volumes.

Also,

You might think about either an inline high pass filter for your bookshelf speakers, or a passive or active crossover. These will help you better integrate the sub into your system since your amp doesn't have a sub-out.

thanks Ross for your suggestions,

probably will go with a single stf1 initially and then if required will add another. that will save some essential space also if i go for two of them.
hope i wont miss the extra extention of stf2.

as far as hookup is concerned i like my fronts to play full/max possible range, so ill have my fronts connected to A speaker out of amp and B speaker out to sub's hi input and set sub's crossover to as low as possible..

No problem opium.

I think you'll find that the STF1 is more than enough for rock. Just plop in some early Metallica or Def Leppard.
