Hey all,
I'm new to the Hsu Forum and am currently thinking about purchasing a new sub. Well, I might be purchasing a new sub. But anyways, if I do buy a sub, it would have to be in the 500-550 dollar range. Which puts the VTF-2 right in the line- up. So, here are my questions.
I'll be going from a 12" sub to this VTF-2 sub, will the VTF-2 be able to sound at least as good as my previous sub?
Also, in max extension mode, does the VTF-2 have any audible port noise? The reason I ask is because my old sub had port noise and it kind of drove me insane. Hehe.
Well, that's it for now. I can't wait to hear what the fellow Hsu owners have to say about my questions.
Over and out!

Although I don't own a VTF-2, I know it is amazingly good. What is your old sub?

My old sub is an Energy 12" sub.

How big is the room and how loud do you like to listen?
Another question, if you don't mind, do you have a spare amp laying around by chance, say with about 200W at 4 ohms? If so, a passive TN1220HO sub and bass optimizer can be had for $600... I've got a pair of TN1220HO subs and they are, in a word, awesome. There are very few subs that run with the TN series, even fewer that sound as good and can play as deep or as loud.
Not having heard any of HSU's box subs, I can't offer any advice on the port noise issue, but I suspect only really deep bass played rather loud would produce port noise on the VTF-2. The 10" VTF-2 actually puts many 12" subs to shame in terms of SPL output capability, frequency response, and musicality. I don't think you can go wrong with a HSU sub.

I have had my VTF-2 in one of my systems for several years and it never fails to amaze me how great it sounds. No matter what I play, it really is a sub that keeps up with any of the demands my sound system requires. I have the much bigger and more expensive VTF-3 in another system but the little VTF-2 holds up very well.

Thanks for the responses all. I have looked at the mammoth that is the TN1220HO. It looks like an awesome sub but I don't know how the folks would like it if I bought a sub that is 51" tall. Even though I wouldn't mind buying it. The other thing is the only thing I have that would be able to run it is a Denon Receiver that I am holding for my uncle. Would I be able to run a TN1220HO sub with just that receiver for a while? Would it be easy to set up? Also, would it sound good being run off the Denon? The receiver is an AVR-95. It has about 85 watts in 8 ohms.
Also, is the price $600 with free shipping or do I have to pay shipping? My budget can only stretch so far as I am only a college student who definitely doesn't have much money.
About the room size. Well, my parents will be moving to a new house in the next year or less. The house they are looking at will have a 19x16 family room that leads into the kitchen which would be 19x13. So it's a pretty big area in the proposed house that it might dwell in.
Our current house the living room/dining room is 13x19 with a ceiling that goes from 8 feet to 12 feet. It also leads to the kitchen except the kitchen has a wall but has an opening in the wall so that you can look at the family room through the kitchen.
Also I like alot of bass. My current sub is a nice sounding sub...but when you put it loud I hear port noise.

A TN with the bass optimizer is $599 (free shipping, not sure how long the free shipping will last). 85W at 8 Ohms difinitely won't drive the TN properly; I give both of mine 400W each, but HSU recommends 200W-500W for the TN's.
With a $600 budget, you might be able to get a STF-3 sub when they come out.
With a room as big as the one you say you might be moving in to, I'd think a pair of VTF-3s or a pair of TN1220HO subs would be "required" to get proper bass response. However, if you are a more sane person than I, a single VTF-3 or TN1220HO would probably be enough. :D
