View Full Version : Which Hsu sub is right for me?

Hello everyone,

My name is Mark Kleis (I know, the user name wasn't obvious enough, right?), and I am looking to upgrade my sub and was hoping for some input.

I currently have a Hsu Research VTF-2-MK2 10-inch subwoofer. While it is certainly a great, great subwoofer, I find myself itching for a little more "oomph."

I have a Denon AVR3606, currently only utilizing a 5.1 setup (120x7 capable), and Klipsch RF35 towers.

I would ideally like to move to either a 12 or a 15, as the ultra low-end is what I feel I am missing. I am looking for something with a tight, snappy feel, however, and something that will have a good presence for even TV-based programming.

The room is roughly 14x12 feet, with one wall only being 6 feet wide and opening into a kitchen. All rooms have 8-foot ceilings.

I believe either the VTF-2-MK3 or VTF-3-MK3 would be right for me - what do you guys think? I would like to keep the price at, around or under $750.

Thanks in advance!

Mark

Hi Mark,

I would go with a VTF-3 MK3 to make for a very substantial upgrade while fitting into your budget too. No doubt the VTF-2 MK3 will be a big upgrade too.

Thanks

Sincerely,

Hi Pete,

I just spoke to the man who used to be a Hsu distributor (he got me my current Hsu sub), and he suggested checking with you to see if there is any way to still obtain the VTF-3 HO.

It appeared as if it might have been discontinued on the website - any idea if you have any lying around? :D

Hi Mark,

The VTF-3 HO was discontinued about two years ago. We are completely sold out of that model. The VTF-3 MK3 is a great alternative though, having the same enclosure size/driver size/port size compared to the -3 HO, with an even nicer finish now too.

Hi! Never owned one but very interested in an Hsu sub! My room size is 10 (H) x 12 (W) x 24 (L). If my math is correct approximately 2880 cubic ft. Based on the rating for room loudness, that would fit in the "2" or "3" loudness category. No slight to my southern citizens in Texas (with a go big or go home:D mentality), but I was looking at the VTF -3 Mk3 in rosewood!

Question? Is the VTF 3 Mk3 overkill for a room that size (2880)?

Little background. I have had three subs, Cambridge Audio (way back in the day), Atlantic Technology 162 PBM series, and recently a B & W AS2 series sub. By far the AT was the best sub I owned (very musical, notes well defined, it didnt play the lowest, but it sounded the best). With these subs I was in a much smaller area (less then 1500 cubic ft). Ironically? LOVE my
B & W Speakers, but not a fan at all of that particular B & W sub.

Listen to 60% music, 40% HT. With music, its alternative, rock, traditional jazz, etc. Honestly I love all music, no particular favorite.

My personal thought? Like to have a lot of articulation with music notes and then on tap a lot of "oomph" for HT. Would rather dial down a sub then push it. THANKS! Tim

Hi Tim,

The VTF-3 MK3 is most definitely not overkill in this space. If anything, in a moderately sized space, one will have higher headroom. Excellent choice!
