View Full Version : Smokey burnt odor coming from unit

I purchased a vtf2-mk3 a few weeks and set it up. Performance is totally fine but the unit emits an odor very similiar to a camp fire smell. It has gotten a bit less pungent as I've used it more, but overall it still exists. Any idea what is going on here? Will this burn off? Should I exchange the unit? My whole livingroom smells like a firepit....Any advice would be appreciated-

Hmm, a burnt smell is not good. Give HSU a call.

My VTF-3 Mk3 smells similar to what you are describing when I first got it but it faded over a few weeks. I think the rubber feet was the culprete. I sure hope the Turbo that is due to arrive in a couple of days doesn't stink too! :D

Find the rubber feet and remove them from the room if they are not being used. I had to wrap mine and put them in another thick plastic bag and the odor will still come out but very little. I was quite disappointed in that smell and why they would release such an aweful smelling part of the product. The things stink and there really is no reason for them to smell like this. If you are using them on your sub now and can use the spikes instead, do that. If not then you are in trouble! an idea would be to wrap them with black electrical tape carefully so they look nice and that should contain a high percentage of the smell.
Bright side is they don't affect the sound quality when they are being used short of damping the sound!

On carpet, I would remove the rubber feet and only use spikes. On other flooring surfaces, try using only the spikes (and no rubber feet) while using a throw rug underneath the subwoofer.

Thanks for the tips and your prompt reply. However I am curious why, as a representative of HSU, you wouldn't stop shipping units with these smelly rubber feet? It appears that you are aware of this issue given your specific response. By the way, I directly emailed customer support once already and was told it was drying glue on the inside of the unit. I appreiate your help and hopefully this is the end of this dicussion-

Hi Peter,
Do spikes come with the MK3? Do you sell spikes for it as an option?

Would the automakers stop shipping cars because of that 'new car smell'? It gives me headaches...

I was only giving some advice on what one can do immediately if one notices a strange smell coming specifically from the rubber feet. When using subwoofers with spiked feet (like VTF-2 Mk3) on non-carpet surfaces, it is generally best to use a throw rug anyway. If the feet are not the issue in your case, then disregard earlier comments. The incidents where a smell has been reported for whatever reason has been fairly isolated, and over some time it wears off.

Only the VTF-2 Mk3 uses spikes (with rubber cones supplied if one needs/wants to use it), due to downfiring driver.

I have a desk drawer that I keep cables, my SPL meter, and other audio stuff in. One day it smelled like someone had spilled liquid smoke in the drawer. I thought maybe my SPL meter had been left on and started to overheat or something. However, when I smelled it it seemed ok.
I looked through the drawer and couldn't find anything that would smell. After reading this thread I checked the drawer again and, sure enough, the rubber feet from my VTF 2.3 are in there. Too funny!
I'll think I'll put them in with my flannel shirts to give the shirts a woodsy outdoors smell. :D

I had that same pungent campfire smell coming from my VTF-1 as soon as I opened it up. I too determined it was coming from the rubber feet. It smelled up the entire first floor of our house and the wife was mad ! Anywany I soaked mine in hot soapy water overnight and this cut the smell dramaticlly. However, if you got close to the sub fro the next several weeks you could still smell it.
My sub is now about 3 months old and the smell is totally gone. I just figured it was a cold wineter's day in southern Cali and the fireplace was raoring when my sub was packaged up:p

I am sorry but I tried to read this over and over, but still can't understand what you are trying to advice. Please excuse my English since it is my second language.
You were saying: "On carpet, I would remove the rubber feet and only use spikes."
It sounds like: Carpet flooring = NO rubber feet but spikes.
Then you said: "On other flooring surfaces, try using only the spikes (and no rubber feet) while using a throw rug underneath the subwoofer."
It also sounds like: On other flooring surfaces = Spikes and NO rubber feet
So, my question is when you use the smelly rubber feets?

Here is what Peter is saying:
Carpet=Just use spikes.
Other Flooring=Put a piece of carpet (throw rug) under the subwoofer and use the spikes.
Do not use the smelly rubber feet!
