This post is to request an optimal setup strategy for my system. There are so many interacting connections and parameters that I have significant insecurity about what may be the optimal strategy.

My system consists of: (1) an NEC LT240 projector; (2) a Sony DVP-NS425P progressive scan DVD player; (3) a Pioneer VSX-D912 surround sound receiver; (4) Ventriloquist speaker system; and (5) a VTF-3R subwoofer.

The DVP player connects to the receiver via digital audio coax and to the projector via component video cables.

The Ventriloquist connects to the receiver in accordance with Figure 4 for 6.1 A/V receivers.

The -3R currently connects to the receiver in accordance with the figure in the manual titled "Recommended setup with an A/V Receiver, i.e., by digital audio coax between the subwoofer output of the receiver and the lower of the two Line Level Inputs on the subwoofer.

The receiver has a built-in low-pass filter that has 100 Hz as its lowest settable frequency.

The only viable locations for the subwoofer are to the rear and side of the listening area. I'm hearing the subwoofer directionally.

My natural inclination would be to use the subwoofer low-pass filter and set it for 80 Hz, since the Ventriloquist is specified to 80 Hz. If I did that, it appears I would need to turn off the low-pass filter in the receiver, set the front-center speaker for "large," and then connect both subwoofer Line Level Inputs to the receiver. If I did that, it appears to me that the full bandwidth of the audio signal would go to the Ventriloquist center speaker, and I don't know how well it would handle that. I also don't know if the Ventriloquist speaker roll-off at 80 Hz matches the roll-up of the -3R when its low-pass filter is set for 80 Hz. Many imponderables and little knowledge.

So. What is the optimal strategy?
