View Full Version : VTF 3.3, Turbo, and my beloved wife.

Alright, after reading everything I can concerning subs, and after seeing the recent price drop, I'm going to pick up either the 3.3 or the 3.3 Turbo. However, I have some questions regarding dimensions ...
I currently have a cute little 10" 150 watt JBL, and the 3.3 will make it look like a shoebox. I've included a picture of my current setup for reference ...
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m54/fsullivan3/img_6600_4527.jpg
I would like the 3.3/Turbo to be placed right where the current JBL sub is. The is no other placement option, aside from the other side of the TV stand. The width will accomodate the 3.3. The height from the carpet to the bottom of my tv is about 21 1/4 inches nearest the tv stand, which is 1/4 inch too low to place the 3.3, according to the listed dimensions. Is the 21 1/2 inch heighth with the feet? Could I use this sub without the feet on carpet?
As for depth, the front of the TV stand is 26 " from the wall, which would allow me to have the 25" deep 3.3 only 1 inch off the wall if I want to keep it at least even with the front of the TV stand (the wife says that I DO in fact want to accomplish this). However, what is the depth with the Turbo attached? From the photos, it looks like I have an extra 6 inches or so because of the Turbo - is that accurate? Any possible solutions to the depth issue, if I wanted to get the Turbo?
I would really like to get the Turbo, and my lovely wife would actually spring for it if I could make it work out. I'm just not sure if my current setup will allow it.
And Peter, I replied to a post of yours on avs about whether these prices would be around for father's day? Are you allowed to give any info in that regard?
Thanks.

TheKiller,
Check out the spec of the Turbo from the 2 links below, I think it would clear the TV but it might block the air flow come in out from the Turbo.

Make sure "The Wife" is happy, because if she ain't happy.... you already know that nobody will be happy....:)

Could someone with a Turbo measure the depth of the sub w/ Turbo from the front of the sub to the wall?
thanks for those links - the owner's guide tells me the overall dimensions of the Turbo, but I really need to know how much the Turbo increases the depth of the sub, once attached.
Does anyone think that the Turbo ports being semi-covered by the front of the TV would be a problem?

33 inches is the length of the 3.3 with Turbo attached. Also remember that you want access to the Bash panel for adjustments on the rear so putting it with the back to the wall will be too crowded. The width is 17 inches and I would move everything out to accomidate putting the sub with the speaker firing toward you. This will allow you to access the rear Bash panel.:) :)

So i should have my 3.3 firing toward me? Will it make that big of a difference?
How do others align their hsu side-firing subs?

Just try it different positions and see what sounds best for you. It is an inconvenience when the amp is in the back near a wall if you have to make adjustments but the most important thing is sound. With feet on carpet, my 3.3 w/turbo is 22 1/4" high in the front and 32 3/4" in the rear to the top of the turbo. It sounds like you are going to have some placement issues. These subs are pretty big but the sound you get.....:D:cool:

Hi TKT!
Unfortunately I don't think it would be easy to fit the VTF-3 Mk3 into that space. With turbo, there is 6" of additional depth and 10" of additional height to contend with. Without turbo, you still need to keep at least three or four inches of space between the rear firing ports and back wall. Also, you will need at least a couple inches of space in between the side-firing woofer and any surface next to it.
Outlaw has a sale on their LFM-1+ subwoofer right now, only $499. This has downfiring ports and woofer, so you don't need much space at back (only enough for the amp connections). You might want to contact them about exactly how tall it will be after the spikes sink in to your carpet a bit.
The VTF-1 would fit nicely there for sure. If your room is less than 3000 ft^3, then that would work well too.
Sincerely,

Thanks for your reply, Peter, but I want a VTF-3 MK3!
If it extends a little in front of the tv stand, we can certainly survive. As for being side-firing, I can at least give it 6 inches. Would that be sufficient?
My room is huge - 20' x 20' with 18' cathedral ceiling on a 12' wall, open to the entryway and dining room on one side and halfway open to the kitchen in the back. In other words, lots of cubic feet.
I could just hook up the Turbo when I need to really show it off, and leave the Turbo off for regular TV viewing. How difficult is it to install and take off?
Thanks for your replies.

Go with the 3.3 Turbo. You will not be sorry as it is a excellent sub for TV, Movies, and Music.:) :) :) :) :)

I went with the 3.3 - I'll make it fit, even if I need a new TV ...
As for the Turbo, I wanted it, but originally the 3.3 w/ Turbo, after the price drop, was $729. When I got ready to buy, the 3.3 was $629, and the 3.3 w/ Turbo was $799 - so I would have totally lost the discount.
If I need Turbo later, I'll buy it separately for the $199.
I'll post pics and my review once it is set up.

I'd call HSU and see if they'll sell you the sub w/turbo for $729. You have up to 30 days to add the turbo at the discounted price ($100).

Nobody says you have to keep the turbo on top of the sub all of the time. Only need it when you need the extra bass.

I called them again to see if they would sell me the 3.3 w/ Turbo for $729, and I was told that they would make no money if they did that, and that you had to pay $799 to get the 3.3 w/ Turbo.
I don't understand their logic, but it's their company so I'm not complaining. However, I'll hold off on the Turbo. Who knows, it may some day go on sale.

The Turbo should go on sale when the SUPERCHARGER becomes available. :)

I pulled the trigger, and my 3.3 is rockin' the house.
I made it fit.

You just can't prepare yourself for how big this sub is. Haven't calibrated yet, but it is very impressive. I've already had to turn down the sub channel on my receiver.

I had forgotten that the TV stand originally had a swivel top, but we took it off because the TV base was too wide. I went and dug it out of the attic and stuck it on there, and hey ... a little overhang is worth it in order to squeeze in the 3.3
