Hi,
I need help I think from the guys at HSU which always are there to help us.
I have the turbo version of the 3.3. My settings are these:
Onkyo 805 : sub at -6
Volume usually at -20db in movies...
Sub volume gain at 10 o' clock.
When I listen to movies, no problem at all, unless that movie is Superman Returns the scene where the earthquake is beneath the sea and approaching the city...
In that part even at volume -24 the sub starts to do what I think it is suspension noises with the driver "rattling" too much causing distortion in the sound that I can hear... The same occurs with the Saint Saenz track 1 of the CD HSU gives at even -29 receiver volume...I thought that that is not suppossed to happen since the driver isnt making that pop sound like when a sub bottoms out, but instead that distortion sound of the uncontrolled driver dont let it got louder and disturbes me...
What i cant understand is why it distorts because the driver isnt reaching all of its excursion limit, what i mean is I have seen the driver move much more "from peak to peak" in other movies and it has played louder and it doesnt make that sound...? Any ideas??
Dont get me wrong this sub is excellent, I have tried without the turbo to see if the sub bottoms out or if it distorts so I can hear it, but nahhh whitout the turbo it is invincible, it is just another sub with almost unlimited power hitting very very hard, more that I can ever stand...
All I want to know is if it is normal ?, since it only occurs with this movie and with the Saint Saenz CD...
It is my opinion that this 3.3 is a much much more louder capable sub without the Turbo that with it inserted, that is how it feels in my room.
Will the supercharger add more volume to the maximum extension mode? Any release date? Approximate Cost?
Thanks and sincerely,
Cacimar Hernandez

its possible that it isnt the sub distorting but the room shaking instead. I was calibrating my stf-2 yesterday and my entire apartment was shaking. Ive thought it was distorting several times but it turned out to be room effects. and thats an stf-2. couldnt imagine a 3.3 with turbo.

2 things: 1. make sure your turbo is not leaking air around the seals. This will cause a strange fluttering sound. Pull the turbo foward on it's sticky matt until the seal is tight.
2. It may be your room vibrating. On Track 1 of the HSU CD with the turbo installed, everything in my room started vibrating. While first impressive, it is annoying going forward. If your room articles cannot be properly isolated from this vibration you may be better off running without the turbo.

Yes ive checked it but I hear no air leaking...even if I push the turbo harder into the ports it is the driver going crazy that makes a sound, not a helicopter sound, but instead like if the rubber of the driver is causing the sound!!! This has all began since i upgraded my receiver to the new Onkyo 805 receiver...
It sounds awesome in all other material I put on it, but with that track at volume -29db in the receiver, -4 sub gain, 10 o clock sub volume, It start to make that weird sound!!! As soon as I remove the turbo even if the driver vibrates like that in that track no weird sound is coming from it!!!
I had to glue the rubber gaskets that come with the turbo since one of them was broke, but i glued them as push the turbo with my hands way in and still it makes the sound if I go louder than -29db in the receiver. I dont know maybe I will contact HSU to see if they have better seals for that turbo because honestly all other materials they use are very good but the rubber that came with my turbo sucks big time!!!

It sounds like the exact problem I had with my turbo! The foam seal at the end of the turbo was not glued properly on the bottom of one of the tubes causing air to leak and a very strange sound that was, at first glance, coming from the driver but really coming from the turbo tube as the air was pushed and pulled thru the tube and partially thru the leak. It sounded like a flutter or helicopter noise. I say get a replacement turbo.

Ok, but the sub does the same sound without the turbo with one port plugged... ANd I realized the sound since I changed my receiver... With this receiver the sub feels more dynamic so apparently it has more gain in the low hz with the Audessey auto calibration of Onkyo...
So if it does it with one port plugged without the turbo it cannot be the turbo...
The only thing i know is that in maximum output is sounds without making any weird sound!!!

Ok... found the problem it is the sub box iself...Talked to tech support and told me to put a razor blade within the upper cap of the woofer and the rest of the box.. I think it improved a little, but I cant understand why it happened!!! My sub has 4 months of use!!!
And when it arrived from the mail (FedEx) it wasnt sounding like that... I just got a damaged box...
Can customer service told me what can they do for me to fix this.? Can there be a replament sub for me?
I mean i payed $1,000 for this baby and not being able to play it in 16hz loud enough is like having another sub...
Please Dr or someone offer me a better solution for this matter.

He told me about the blade so that it would help to fill the space if any between the sub upper mdf and the rounding mdf so i could fill that "gap" and put pressure between the panels so they dont vibrate.... But after he helped me i found out that nothing stops the sound... That it was that the gain I have with the Saint Saenz orchestra at the 1:50-2:10 vibrates too much so the air causes port noise, and then he told me that it was normal, so my sub has no damage...
I dont know what to thought so I went to Radio Shack and got the digital SPL meter at last...
I measured at the Jurassic Park III dino fight when the T. Rex stomps for the first time 116db at my listening position in my 2,400 cuft room in that particular stomp with turbo, so maybe without it I could get about 120db!!!!
Impressive!!!!
I also measured 87db at 16hz without the port noise in the track 9 of the HSU cd, and without the compensation dbs the instruction manual of HSU says I should add.WIth them then it would be about 100db!!!
SO I think my sub has no problem at all....
What do you think of that?
Could I have a problem? It is just that in movies I cannot hear the sound but where there are 16hz sustained if it got too loud the air sounds very bad!!!

It sounds like you may be hearing port noise. How far from the sub is the listening position? Have you calibrated all your speakers and sub? From those numbers you may be running the sub really hot. Just my thoughts.

The listening position is at 12 feet from sub. But the measurements where taking when trying to bottom out the sub... So yes really hot!!!

Yikes - that can't be good for your ears. ;)
It can get real loud.

There was another thread last month about a guy doing the same thing. He finally admitted after several posts that he was trying to see how far the 3.3 Turbo would go before bottoming out. Hey, these subs are fun toys but just set them up and enjoy them! Being a bass hound will always cause issues with any setup.
