Placing furniture in front of subwoofer....

I am still determining which sub to buy, but I had a quick placement question. Would placing a small sofa about 9 inches in front of a front firing subwoofer be an issue? Would a downfiring sub be a better option?

It shouldn't be a huge issue doing that. I normally recommend that people place the VTF-3 Mk3 or HO sideways behind the couch with woofer firing into the couch (1-2" of space in between woofer and couch). If your room is relatively deep, then you will be a good candiate for nearfield placement of the subwoofer.
